al-Hidaya wal-Irshad fi Ma'rifat Ahl al-Thiqa wal-Sadad (Arabic: الهداية والإرشاد في معرفة أهل الثقة والسداد), commonly known as Rijal Sahih al-Bukhari (رجال صحيح البخاري), is a biographical dictionary of hadith transmitters by the Bukharan hadith scholar Abu Nasr al-Kalabadhi (323–398 AH / 935–1008 CE) . The work is devoted to identifying and detailing the biographies of the narrators whose traditions were included by al-Bukhari in his canonical compilation, Sahih al-Bukhari .
Scope and Structure
The book provides biographical coverage of the transmitters appearing in the chains of transmission (isnad) of Sahih al-Bukhari . Al-Kalabadhi arranged the entries alphabetically by the transmitters' given names, beginning with the letter alif and individuals named Ahmad .
In each biographical entry, the author generally records:
- The narrator's full name, patronymic, lineage, and geographic or tribal affiliations .
- The prominent teachers and authorities from whom the narrator transmitted .
- The specific topical books and chapters within Sahih al-Bukhari where al-Bukhari cited their narrations, distinguishing whether they were cited directly or via intermediaries .
- Dates and places of death, often citing reports recorded by al-Bukhari himself or other authorities such as Ibn Mandah and Yahya ibn Ma'in .
Transmission and Reception
The work circulated widely among hadith scholars and bibliographers. In Mecca, it was transmitted directly from al-Kalabadhi by scholars including Abu Sa'id 'Umar ibn Muhammad al-Sijzi and Abu al-Husayn 'Abd al-Malik ibn al-Hasan al-Kazaruni, through whom it entered transmission lines into al-Andalus, as documented in the indices (faharis) of Ibn 'Atiyya and Ibn Khayr al-Ishbili .
The Andalusian scholar Abu al-Walid al-Waqqashi authored a critical and corrective work on the treatise titled al-Tanbihat 'ala Abi Nasr al-Kalabadhi ("Remarks and Corrections on Abu Nasr al-Kalabadhi") . Later, the hadith scholar Ibn al-Qaysarani (d. 507 AH) combined al-Kalabadhi's work on Sahih al-Bukhari with Abu Bakr Ibn Manjuyah's parallel work on Sahih Muslim into a single alphabetical synthesis titled al-Jam' bayna Rijal al-Sahihayn ("The Combination of the Transmitters of the Two Sahihs") .
Publication
The work has been published under both its primary and descriptive titles:
- An early edition was printed in two volumes by the Osmania Oriental Publications Bureau (Da'irat al-Ma'arif al-'Uthmaniyya) in Hyderabad .
- A two-volume edition edited by 'Abdullah al-Laythi was published in Beirut by Dar al-Ma'rifa in 1407 AH / 1987 CE under the title Rijal Sahih al-Bukhari: al-Hidaya wal-Irshad fi Ma'rifat Ahl al-Thiqa wal-Sadad .
