Rijal al-Hakim fi al-Mustadrak (Arabic: رجال الحاكم في المستدرك) is a biographical dictionary of Hadith narrators compiled by the Yemeni traditionist Muqbil bin Hadi al-Wadii (d. 1422 AH / 2001 CE) . The work gathers biographical entries and critical assessments for transmitters appearing in the chains of transmission (asānīd) of al-Hakim al-Naysaburi’s al-Mustadrak ʿala al-Sahihayn who were not covered in standard biographical compendia of canonical narrators, specifically Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani’s Tahdhib al-Tahdhib .

Scope and Purpose

The primary motivation for compiling the work was the difficulty of tracing transmitters found in the lower tiers of al-Hakim's chains—specifically al-Hakim’s direct shaykhs and their teachers—a task al-Wadii noted that many researchers avoided when investigating chains where al-Dhahabi had remained silent in his abridgment (Talkhis) .

Because al-Hakim narrated from prominent scholars such as Ibn Hibban and al-Daraqutni, received traditions through intermediate teachers from figures such as al-Tabarani, Ibn Adi, and al-Tabari, and was transmitted from by later authorities like al-Bayhaqi, the scope of the biographical entries extends beyond al-Mustadrak itself, encompassing numerous critics and traditionists active in the generations between the compilers of the six canonical books and al-Hakim .

Sources and Methodology

The work focuses on narrators who were omitted from Tahdhib al-Tahdhib or who fall outside the scope of al-Mizzi’s Tahdhib al-Kamal . Entries include the narrator's full identity and citations of evaluations from early biographical and evaluation literature . Among the primary classical reference works utilized are:

  • Siyar Aʿlam al-Nubalaʾ, Mizan al-Iʿtidal, Tarikh al-Islam, and Tadhkirat al-Huffaz by al-Dhahabi
  • Tarikh Baghdad by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi
  • Al-Jarh wa-al-Taʿdil by Ibn Abi Hatim
  • Al-Thiqat and Kitab al-Majruhin by Ibn Hibban
  • Al-Ikmal by Ibn Makula and its continuation Takmilat al-Ikmal by Ibn Nuqta
  • Al-Duʿafaʾ by al-Uqayli

In the preface, al-Wadii addresses principles of Hadith transmitter criticism (al-jarḥ wa-al-taʿdīl), including cautionary notes on the methodology of Ibn Hibban regarding the authentication of obscure narrators (majhūlūn) .

Editions and Related Works

The first edition of the book was published in two volumes by Dar al-Haramayn in Cairo (1419 AH), containing biographical notices for 1,937 narrators . A second edition was later published in two volumes by Maktabat San'a' al-Athariyya (1425 AH / 2004 CE) .

Al-Wadii subsequently compiled a complementary biographical work titled Tarājim Rijāl al-Dāraquṭnī fī Sunanihi, dedicated to 1,385 narrators in the Sunan of al-Daraqutni who were not documented in Taqrib al-Tahdhib or in Rijal al-Hakim . An abridgment and arrangement titled Tahdhib Rijal Mustadrak al-Hakim was prepared by Maqbul bin Ali al-Ahdal and published in 1424 AH . Contemporary editors of al-Mustadrak have also referenced and adopted al-Wadii's methodological framework when cataloging non-Tahdhib transmitters in their indices and appendices .
