Rawdat al-Taqrir fi Ikhtilaf al-Qiraat bayn al-Irshad wa al-Taysir (The Garden of Determination on the Disagreement in Readings Between al-Irshad and al-Taysir) is a didactic poem on Quranic readings by the Iraqi scholar Ali ibn Abi Muhammad al-Diwani (d. 743 AH / 1342 CE) . The work compares the variations in transmission between two foundational regional traditions of the Seven Readers .
Subject and Method
The poem focuses on the textual and transmission differences (ikhtilaf) among the Seven Readers, their transmitters, and lines of transmission (turuq) between the Iraqi and Syrian schools of recitation . The Iraqi school is represented by Irshad al-Mubtadi of Abu al-Izz al-Wasiti, while the Syrian tradition is represented by al-Taysir of Abu Amr al-Dani, alongside the additions included by al-Shatibi in his poem Hirz al-Amani .
Al-Diwani's method relies on omission of consensus: points on which the two traditions agreed were excluded, recording only their discrepancies and what one source transmitted over the other .
Structure and Versification
The work is composed as a daliyya (rhyming in the letter dal) in the basit meter, utilizing the metrical modification of khabn in both its cadence (arud) and rhyme (darb) . In its original manuscript, the poem spans 434 lines of verse, extending to 436 lines when accounting for two verses preserved in its commentary .
Reception, Commentary, and Transmission
The poem was written under the full title Kitab Rawdat al-Taqrir fi Ikhtilaf al-Qiraat bayn al-Irshad wa al-Taysir, though it is also cited in biographical and bibliographical dictionaries as Rawdat al-Taqrir fi al-Khulf bayn al-Irshad wa al-Taysir or simply Rawdat al-Taqrir .
Al-Diwani authored his own commentary on the poem, titled Sharh Rawdat al-Taqrir . Ibn al-Jazari cited the text among the foundational sources relied upon in his work al-Nashr fi al-Qiraat al-Ashr .
The poem was edited by Muhammad ibn Rajab al-Kholi and published in Riyadh by Dar al-Asimah (1432 AH / 2011 CE) . The edition was established from an autograph manuscript preserved within a compilation in the Department of Islamic Manuscripts and Libraries at the Kuwaiti Ministry of Awqaf (MS 282), supplemented by the author's commentary manuscript .
