Rawdat al-Mustabin fi Sharh Kitab al-Talqin (The Garden of the Clarifier in Explaining the Book of Instruction) is a commentary on al-Qadi 'Abd al-Wahhab al-Baghdadi's (d. 422 AH) foundational Maliki legal manual al-Talqin, authored by the North African Maliki jurist Ibn Baziza (606–673 AH / 1209–1274 CE; other reports give 662 AH or 663 AH) .

Purpose and Methodology

In the prologue of the work, Ibn Baziza stated that his objective was to address al-Qadi Abu Muhammad 'Abd al-Wahhab ibn 'Ali al-Baghdadi's Kitab al-Talqin, systematically tracing its questions, defining its legal constraints (dawabit), and resolving its difficult formulations in a concise manner without excessive elaboration .

He evaluated earlier treatments of the text, observing that while Abu 'Abd Allah al-Mazari had written an extremely precise commentary encompassing the overarching doctrines of the school, al-Mazari's expansive scope rendered it effectively a general compendium of the Maliki school rather than a direct textual commentary . Ibn Baziza also noted the existence of a brief commentary by al-Qadi 'Abd al-Wahhab himself on its ambiguous points and additions by later contemporaries; he therefore structured Rawdat al-Mustabin directly around the original sequence of the base text's legal rulings .

Scope and Structure

The commentary proceeds through the canonical sections of Maliki jurisprudence. The first volume concludes with the chapter on nursing (Kitab al-Rida'), followed in the subsequent volume by the chapter on commercial transactions (Kitab al-Buyu') and onward through legal topics such as judicial administration (ahkam) and witnesses . Throughout the exposition, Ibn Baziza highlights points of consensus and divergence among the major jurists—including Abu Hanifa and al-Shafi'i—as well as intra-school Maliki transmissions .

Reception and Editions

Ibn Baziza came to be regarded as one of the authoritative figures of the Maliki tradition, and Rawdat al-Mustabin served as an established reference for legal verification . The jurist Khalil ibn Ishaq relied heavily upon Ibn Baziza's positions for determining well-known rulings (tashhir) and legal preference (tarjih) in his seminal commentary al-Tawdih .

The text was edited by Abd al-Latif Zakkagh and published in an edition issued jointly by Markaz al-Imam al-Tha'alibi and Dar Ibn Hazm in 1431 AH (2010 CE) .
