Rawdat al-Abidin (The Meadow of the Worshippers) is an Islamic treatise on spiritual exhortation, heart-softening reminders (raqa'iq), and moral purification written by the Yemeni author Abd Allah ibn Abduh al-Awadi, completed in 1439 AH (2018 CE) .
Purpose and Background
Al-Awadi completed the introduction to the work at dawn on Sunday, 9 Dhu al-Qa'dah 1439 AH . He composed the book in response to what he diagnosed as a pervasive spiritual dryness and neglect of religious practice in contemporary society, noting that many who pursue knowledge focus solely on accumulating information while suffering from empty souls, hardened hearts, and a lack of practical devotion . Stressing that the method of the early generations (al-Salaf) combined textual knowledge with action and constant remembrance of the hereafter, he intended the treatise first as a personal admonition and self-reform, and second as general guidance and counsel for others .
Structure and Methodology
The work is organized into chapters centered on encouragement and deterrence (al-targhib wa-l-tarhib), focusing on matters the author deemed essential for the seeker journeying toward God (al-salik ila Allah) . It is conceived as a spiritual orchard from which individual Muslims can draw means to rectify their hearts and conduct, as well as a practical handbook for preachers and lecturers to draw upon when preparing sermons and educational lessons .
In constructing his arguments, al-Awadi relies extensively on verses from the Quran, prophetic hadiths, and traditions transmitted from the Companions . He also draws heavily on the sayings and spiritual insights of classical scholars and ascetics, prominent among them al-Hasan al-Basri, Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, Ibn al-Jawzi, Ibn al-Qayyim, and Ibn Rajab .
