Rasail wa Fatawa al-Shaykh Hamad bin Nasir bin Uthman bin Muammar is a collection of theological treatises, legal responsa, and letters by the Najdi Hanbali scholar Hamad bin Nasir Al Muammar (d. 1225 AH / 1810 CE), published as the second section of the second volume of the multi-author compendium Majmuat al-Rasail wal-Masail al-Najdiyya ("Compendium of Najdi Treatises and Legal Inquiries") .

Publication and Structure

The collection was published under the patronage and direct order of Sultan Abd al-Aziz Al Saud at Matbaat al-Manar in Cairo, Egypt, in 1344 AH (c. 1925/1926 CE), under the editorial supervision and annotation of Muhammad Rashid Rida .

Within the second volume of Majmuat al-Rasail wal-Masail al-Najdiyya, the text forms the middle division of three parts:

  • The first part comprises Kitab al-Iman and various treatises by Abd al-Rahman bin Hasan (d. 1285 AH) .
  • The second part contains the treatises and fatwas of Hamad bin Nasir bin Uthman bin Muammar .
  • The third part consists of the treatises and legal answers of Abdullah bin Abd al-Rahman Aba Butayn (d. 1282 AH) .

Contents and Themes

The collection compiles several independent letters and answers across creedal theology and jurisprudence:

  • Theology and Creed: The work contains expositions defining the formula of sincere monotheism (la ilaha illa Allah), clarifying the grammatical and doctrinal distinction between the negated false deities and the affirmed true God, supported by Quranic verses including ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الْحَقُّ وَأَنَّهُ يُحْيِي الْمَوْتَى (Surah al-Hajj: 6) and وَأَنَّ مَا يَدْعُونَ مِنْ دُونِهِ هُوَ الْبَاطِلُ (Surah al-Hajj: 62 and Surah Luqman: 30) .
  • Jurisprudential Treatises (Uddat Rasail fi Masail Fiqhiyya): A sequence of letters addressed to correspondents such as Jam'an bin Nasir, resolving various legal and practical inquiries .
  • Ritual Prayer and Purity: The responsa discuss specific rulings of prayer (salat), including the alignment of congregants behind the imam, whether prayer is invalidated when reciting Surat al-Fatiha with grammatical errors (referencing transmissions from Ahmad ibn Hanbal and the position of al-Shafi'i), and the ruling on praying while inadvertently carrying unnoticed impurity on one's body or garment .
  • Financial and Social Rulings: Inquiries addressing the propriety of a mosque leader requesting monetary aid from public treasury revenue (fay') versus obligatory alms (zakat), as well as subsidiary questions on the nullification of ritual ablution (wudu) .
