Ramy al-Jamarat fi Daw al-Kitab wa al-Sunna wa Athar al-Sahaba (The Stoning of the Jamarat in Light of the Quran, the Sunnah, and the Traditions of the Companions) is a legal treatise on the Hajj ritual of stoning the pillars, authored by the Saudi scholar Saeed bin Ali bin Wahf al-Qahtani (d. 1440 AH / 2018 CE) .

Composition and Purpose

Al-Qahtani completed writing the treatise on the morning of Monday, 18 Rajab 1429 AH . His stated aim was to compile a concise, precise reference detailing everything a pilgrim requires concerning the stoning of the pillars on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr) and the Days of Tashriq (Ayyam al-Tashriq) .

In terms of methodology, al-Qahtani supported every issue with evidence from the Quran, the Sunnah, scholarly consensus (ijma), or narrations of the Companions . He presented the preponderant legal ruling (al-qawl al-rajih) within the main body of the text, while relegating scholarly differences and their evaluations to the footnotes for the benefit of students of knowledge . Throughout the work, he relied extensively on the legal determinations and verdicts of his teacher, Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz .

Structure

The book is structured into an introduction and four main chapters (mabahith) :

  1. Chapter One: The concept of stoning the Jamarat (Mafhum Ramy al-Jamarat), examining its linguistic and legal definitions .
  2. Chapter Two: The reason and underlying wisdom behind the legislation of stoning the Jamarat (Sabab mashru'iyyat ramy al-jamarat wa-hikmatuh) .
  3. Chapter Three: Stoning the Pillar of Aqaba and its etiquettes (Ramy Jamrat al-Aqaba wa-adabuh) .
  4. Chapter Four: Stoning the pillars during the Days of Tashriq and its etiquettes (Ramy al-jamarat ayyam al-tashriq wa-adabuh) .

Reception and Endorsements

The treatise was first published in Ramadan 1429 AH and received forewords from senior Saudi scholars :

  • Sheikh Salih al-Fawzan, a member of the Council of Senior Scholars, commended the book on 28 Rajab 1429 AH, describing it as well-researched, beneficial, supported by evidence, and properly documented from scholarly sources .
  • Sheikh Salih al-Luhaydan, also a member of the Council of Senior Scholars, endorsed the work on 14 Shawwal 1430 AH after reviewing it at the author's request . Al-Luhaydan praised al-Qahtani's diligence in textual transmission and legal deduction, concurred with al-Fawzan's appraisal, and highlighted the author's acknowledgment of how modern engineering expansions to the Jamarat Bridge during the reign of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz alleviated hardship for pilgrims .
