Qurrat al-Ayn bi-Fatawa Ulama al-Haramayn (Delight of the Eyes with the Fatwas of the Scholars of the Two Holy Sanctuaries) is a collection of legal responsa (fatwas) compiled by Husayn ibn Ibrahim al-Maghribi al-Azhari (d. 1292 AH / 1875 CE), the Maliki mufti of Mecca .

Purpose and Scope

The author compiled the work to bring together practical legal rulings and inquiries needed by jurists and seekers when issuing or requesting legal verdicts . In his introduction, al-Maghribi states that he gathered issues required by someone of modest learning like himself during times of consultation and legal necessity . The collection centers on questions posed to and answered by scholars residing in the Two Holy Sanctuaries (Mecca and Medina), specifically according to the Maliki school of jurisprudence .

Structure and Method

The work is structured as a series of legal questions and their corresponding answers (queries beginning with ma qawlukum, followed by al-jawab) across standard topics of Islamic law . It covers various chapters of jurisprudence, including:

  • Acts of worship: dealing with procedural rulings, forgetfulness, and the rectification of omitted pillars (tadaruk) during ritual prayer .
  • Commercial transactions: covering complex case studies such as sales conducted by an unauthorized agent (al-bay' al-fuduli), as well as cost-plus financing (murabahah) sales involving misstatements, deceit, or errors regarding the base capital .

In determining rulings, the author relies on and summarizes authoritative late Maliki manuals and commentaries, frequently citing Aqrab al-Masalik alongside authoritative expositions by Ahmad al-Dardir, Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Dusuqi, and Ahmad al-Sawi .

Reception and Publication

The compilation served as a referenced legal source for later Maliki scholars; notably, Abu Bakr al-Kashnawi cites its verdicts extensively throughout his Maliki commentary As-hal al-Madarik sharh Irshad al-Salik .

The text was published in a single volume in Cairo by al-Maktaba al-Tijariyya al-Kubra in 1356 AH (1937 CE) . It was also issued alongside or containing in its margins al-Fawa'id al-Madaniyya fi Bayan Ikhtilaf al-Ulama min al-Shafi'iyya by Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Kurdi in a 1357 AH (1938 CE) printing .
