Qudwat al-Ghazi (The Model of the Warrior) is a treatise on the virtues of military campaigns and jihad (فضائل الجهاد) by the Andalusian Maliki jurist Ibn Abi Zamanin (324–399 AH / 936–1008 CE).

Content and Sources

The book compiles traditions and legal reports regarding the virtues and conduct of warfare. The chained narrations (al-ahadith al-musnada) contained in the work do not stem from Ibn Abi Zamanin's own direct chains of transmission; rather, he transmitted and excerpted them from the earlier works of the Andalusian scholar Abd al-Malik ibn Habib (d. 238 AH).

Among the themes addressed through these narrations are rulings concerning participation in expeditions alongside unjust authorities (a'immat al-jawr), citing chains transmitted through figures such as Asad ibn Musa and Ibn Lahiah. It also records historical reports regarding the Companions on campaign, such as the account of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari participating in military expeditions in Byzantine territory.

Manuscripts and Publication

Manuscript copies of Qudwat al-Ghazi are held in several collections, including:

  • Madrid (MS 575/4, fol. 4).
  • Paris (MS 5349).
  • The King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies in Riyadh (MS 2369-11-F).

The text was reproduced in an offset facsimile edition in Bonn in 1970 CE and published in Beirut in 1989 CE. It was also critically edited by Aisha Husayn al-Sulaymani as a master's thesis submitted to Umm al-Qura University in Saudi Arabia in 1407 AH / 1987 CE.
