Qiyam Ramadan (The Night Vigil Prayer of Ramadan) is a legal treatise by the Yemeni hadith scholar and jurist Abd al-Rahman al-Muallimi al-Yamani (1313–1386 AH / 1896–1966 CE), published as part of his collected works (Athar al-Muallimi) .
Composition and Manuscripts
The treatise was left unfinished by al-Muallimi due to his engagement with more pressing scholarly commitments . Two manuscript witnesses are known:
- The Author's Autograph: Preserved in Maktabat al-Haram al-Makki under shelfmark 4685, written across fourteen oblong-format pages in clear handwriting resembling a fair copy, though bearing later marginal additions, insertions, and strikethroughs characteristic of al-Muallimi's manuscripts .
- The Student's Copy: Transcribed from another original draft of the author by his student, Abd al-Rahman ibn Ahmad al-Muallimi, who completed the transcription on 29 Safar 1383 AH . At the end of the manuscript, the scribe appended a colophon stating that al-Muallimi intended to write a continuation and was urged by his students to finish it, but was prevented from completing it by other scholarly priorities .
Critical Edition
The work was critically edited as the twelfth treatise in the sixteenth volume of Athar al-Muallimi . The critical text was established primarily on the author's autograph manuscript, along with collation against the second transcribed copy provided by the author's nephew, Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd al-Qadir al-Muallimi . The editor omitted textual disorders, omissions, and scribal errors found in the secondary copy while retaining sound variant readings that corroborated the author's original drafts .
