Qada al-Hawaij (The Fulfillment of Needs) is a hadith treatise by the Baghdadi traditionist Ibn Abi al-Dunya (208–281 AH / 823–894 CE) dedicated to the virtues of assisting others, performing good deeds, and relieving the necessities of fellow Muslims .
Subject and Structure
The book is considered among the earliest specialized compilations on the traditions concerning beneficence (al-ma'ruf) and fulfilling personal and communal needs . It gathers 117 textual units consisting of prophetic hadiths, statements of the Companions, and narrations (athar) from early Muslim figures .
The transmitted reports emphasize the spiritual merits of bringing joy to believers, aiding the distressed, and interceding on behalf of those in difficulty . Among its contents are sayings highlighting that walking to assist a fellow Muslim in need is more beloved than extended periods of voluntary prayer or seclusion in the mosque (I'tikaf) , as well as interpretations of traditional adages regarding seeking needs with dignity and an open countenance .
Transmission and Modern Editions
Portions of the work continued to be transmitted in later centuries through formal hadith auditions, including sessions attended by scholars in Cairo under the authority of 'Izz al-Din Ibn Jama'ah .
In the modern era, the work has been published under several critical editions, including an edition prepared by Majdi al-Sayyid Ibrahim and published by Maktabat al-Qur'an in Egypt , an edition by Muhammad 'Abd al-Qadir Ahmad 'Ata published in Beirut in 1413 AH / 1992–1993 CE , and an edition by 'Amr 'Abd al-Mun'im .
