Nur wa Hidaya (Light and Guidance) is an essay and lecture collection by the Syrian scholar and judge Ali al-Tantawi (1327–1420 AH / 1909–1999 CE), posthumously compiled and arranged by his grandson Mujahid Mamun Dayraniyyah .

Background and Compilation

The material comprising the book originates from scattered, previously uncollected articles and radio scripts left behind by al-Tantawi . Some had been published in newspapers and periodicals, while others were written as drafts for broadcasts aired from Damascus or from Mecca over the Sawt al-Islam (Voice of Islam) radio station . Although al-Tantawi had intended during his lifetime to publish several collections of his uncompiled periodical essays, his advancing age and declining energy prevented their realization .

Following al-Tantawi's death, Dayraniyyah surveyed these dispersed papers and drafts, sorting and assembling them over several weeks into coherent thematic volumes . Nur wa Hidaya was the fifth book of al-Tantawi's uncollected writings assembled by Dayraniyyah, and the first in a planned three-part series devoted to general Islamic topics and religious calling (da'wah), followed by Fusul fi al-Da'wa wa-l-Islah (Chapters on Da'wah and Reform) and Mabahith Islamiyya (Islamic Inquiries) . Dayraniyyah adopted the book's title from al-Tantawi's long-running Saudi television program of the same name .

Editorial Method and Scope

In editing the texts, Dayraniyyah grouped related essays and radio talks, discarding near-identical duplicates while retaining articles with overlapping themes if they presented a novel angle or useful contribution . The collection brings together moral exhortations, spiritual reflections, and public guidance, including seasonal talks on acts of worship such as Ramadan and addresses on prophetic traditions .

Publication

The work was completed in Rabi' al-Awwal 1427 AH (2006 CE) in Jeddah and published that same year by Dar al-Manara under the direction of Nadir Hatahit . A second edition was issued in 2009 by Dar al-Manar in Jeddah .
