'The Light of Sincerity and the Darknesses of Seeking the World Through Deeds of the Hereafter in Light of the Book and the Sunnah') is a treatise on Islamic ethics and creed by the Saudi scholar Saeed bin Wahf al-Qahtani (d. 1440 AH / 2018 CE) . The work examines the concept of sincerity (ikhlāṣ), the status of righteous intention, and the spiritual hazards of ostentation (riyāʾ) and pursuing worldly benefits through acts of religious devotion .

Composition and Context

The author completed the treatise on the afternoon of Tuesday, 16 Shawwal 1419 AH (1999 CE) . It was published both as an independent short booklet and as part of his broader compendia of doctrinal treatises, such as the eighth treatise in his multi-volume collection Aqidat al-Muslim fi Daw al-Kitab wa al-Sunna .

Structure and Contents

The book is organized into an introduction followed by two primary chapters (mabḥath), each divided into several thematic subsections (maṭlab) :

  • First Chapter: The Light of Sincerity (Nūr al-Ikhlāṣ): Covers four subsections detailing the linguistic and technical definitions of sincerity, its theological significance, the status and fruits of a righteous intention (al-niyya al-ṣāliḥa), and the spiritual and worldly benefits of sincerity .
  • Second Chapter: The Darknesses of Seeking the World Through Deeds of the Hereafter (Ẓulumāt Irādat al-Dunyā bi-ʿAmal al-Ākhira): Covers seven subsections examining the danger of seeking worldly gains through acts meant for the Hereafter, the categories of deeds done for worldly aims, the dangers and harms of ostentation (riyāʾ), the subtle manifestations of ostentation, its classifications and effects on the validity of deeds, its psychological causes and triggers, and practical and spiritual methods for cultivating sincerity and curing ostentation .

Themes and Methodology

Al-Qahtani frames the work around scriptural proofs from the Quran and the Sunnah, emphasizing that sincerity in intention is the prerequisite for the acceptance of any act of worship . Citing al-Fudayl ibn Iyad, he notes that for a deed to be accepted by God it must be both sincere (done solely for God) and correct (conforming to the prophetic Sunnah) . Drawing on statements from classical scholars such as al-Qadi Iyad and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, the author treats sincerity as an "action of the heart" (ʿamal al-qalb), asserting that inner states form the foundation upon which outer bodily actions depend .

The book distinguishes between ostentation (riyāʾ) and seeking worldly return through worship: while the ostentatious person performs good deeds primarily to receive praise and esteem from people, one who seeks worldly gain performs a pious act not necessarily for praise, but to acquire material benefits (such as performing Hajj on behalf of another solely for money or participating in combat solely for war booty) . Both states are characterized as forms of hidden association (shirk) that invalidate the accompanying deed and contradict complete monotheism (tawhid) .
