Nukat wa Tanbihat fi Tafsir al-Quran al-Majid (Subtleties and Notes on the Interpretation of the Glorious Quran) is a work of Quranic commentary by the Tunisian Maliki scholar and exegete Abu al-Abbas al-Busayli (d. 830 AH / 1427 CE) . It focuses on analytical subtleties, interpretive problematics, and the linguistic and logical examination of the Quranic text .

Composition and Context

The primary material of the work derives from the exegesis lectures of al-Busayli's teacher in Tunis, Ibn 'Arafa (d. 803 AH / 1401 CE), whose sessions al-Busayli attended for twenty years between 783 AH and 803 AH . Al-Busayli first compiled these lectures, alongside earlier records and his own classroom interventions and additions, into an extensive commentary titled al-Taqyid al-Kabir (The Large Record) .

Biographical sources report that after Prince Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Hafsi (known as al-Husayn) demanded the manuscript of al-Taqyid al-Kabir, al-Busayli surrendered most of it but retained a portion (from Surah al-Ra'd to Surah al-Kahf) . He subsequently prepared an abridgment containing selected subtleties and additions, known among biographers as al-Taqyid al-Saghir (The Small Record) and titled in manuscripts and by the author as Nukat wa Tanbihat fi Tafsir al-Quran al-Majid . Internal chronological references—such as a storm in Tunis in 806 AH and his reading of al-Shifa in 808 AH—indicate that al-Busayli continued refining the work years after Ibn 'Arafa's death .

Method and Scope

Rather than providing a comprehensive, verse-by-verse gloss, the book restricts itself to intricate interpretive questions, difficult passages (al-mushkil), and the rhetorical nuances of Quranic composition (asrar al-nazm) . Key features of al-Busayli's approach include:

  • Resolving Apparent Contradictions: A consistent concern with harmonizing verses that appear conflicting, as well as reconciling textual nuances between Quranic statements and Hadiths .
  • Application of Formal Logic: The explicit employment of Aristotelian syllogistic formulas and logical classifications (such as conditional propositions and conversion rules) to analyze Quranic phrasing .
  • Theological Debates: Engaging with theological arguments from an Ash'ari framework, refuting Mu'tazili tenets, and identifying subtle, inadvertent Mu'tazili influences in Sunni commentaries such as that of Ibn Atiyyah .
  • Critical Assessment of Major Exegetes: Engaging in regular critique and citation of prominent commentaries, including al-Zamakhshari's al-Kashshaf, Ibn 'Atiyyah's al-Muharrar al-Wajiz, Fakhr al-Din al-Razi's Mafatih al-Ghayb, Abu Hayyan al-Andalusi's al-Bahr al-Muhit, and Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi's Ahkam al-Quran .
  • Jurisprudence: Addressing legal deductions through the lens of the Maliki school, frequently citing Imam Malik ibn Anas and debates in al-Mudawwanah .

Continuation and Structure

Al-Busayli's abridgment broke off at Surah al-Saff, leaving the final portion of the Quran incomplete, and additionally skipped the exegesis of Surahs al-Shura, al-Zukhruf, al-Najm, and al-Qamar . The Moroccan scholar Ibn Ghazi al-Miknasi (d. 919 AH / 1513 CE) composed a supplement titled Takmilat al-Nukat, drawing from surviving copies of al-Busayli's al-Taqyid al-Kabir to complete the missing commentary up to the end of the Quran .

Reception and Publication

The work was widely used and cited across the Maghrib and North Africa. It served as a source for scholars including al-Hattab in Mawahib al-Jalil, Ahmad Baba al-Tinbukti in Kifayat al-Muhtaj, Ahmad al-Maqqari in Azhar al-Riyad, and Muhammad al-Hajwi in al-Fikr al-Sami, and was reportedly prized by the Saadi Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur .

Nukat wa Tanbihat was edited by Muhammad al-Tabarani alongside Ibn Ghazi's Takmilat al-Nukat and published in three volumes by the Moroccan Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Casablanca: Matba'at al-Najah al-Jadidah, 1429 AH / 2008 CE) .
