Nubdha Latifa wa Nasiha Sharifa (Arabic: نبذة لطيفة ونصيحة شريفة, lit. 'A Subtle Excerpt and Noble Counsel') is a short treatise of scholarly counsel and transmission (ijazah) authored by the Damascene Shafi'i jurist Hasan Jubayna (1241–1306 AH / c. 1825–1889 CE; also reported d. 1305 AH) .

Author and Context

The author, Hasan ibn Ahmad Agha ibn Abd al-Qadir Jubayna, was of Aleppine descent, born in Damascus in 1241 AH, and was the maternal grandson (sibt) of the scholar Muhammad al-Dasuqi . Described by his student Jamal al-Din al-Qasimi as a proficient scholar well versed in Shafi'i jurisprudence, he studied under leading Damascene teachers—including Qasim al-Hallaq and Salim al-Attar—and gathered his transmission licenses in a scholarly inventory (thabat) . He composed this short work on 18 Muharram 1300 AH .

Content and Structure

The work begins with the praise of God for endowing human beings with intellect and discernment, followed by blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and citation of the prophetic hadith: المرء على دين خليله، فلينظر أحدكم من يُخالل ("A person is upon the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look to whom he befriends") .

The text incorporates an explicit scholarly authorization (ijazah), wherein Jubayna grants transmission of all his narrations and authorizations from his teachers recorded in his thabat . Alongside the transmission, it delivers ethical and religious admonitions, exhorting the recipient to:

  • Maintain piety (taqwa) of God and persist in seeking religious knowledge .
  • Engage regularly in the remembrance of God (dhikr) and seeking forgiveness (istighfar) .
  • Obey God and one's parents, and keep company with righteous people .
  • Verify the authenticity of transmitted reports and serve as a sincere source of counsel to fellow believers .

Publication

The text was edited by Muhammad ibn Nasir al-Ajmi and published by Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah as the second booklet in the series Liqa' al-'Ashr al-Awakhir bi-al-Masjid al-Haram . The printed edition was collated against the author's original manuscript during a scholarly gathering in the Sacred Mosque in Mecca on 21 Ramadan 1419 AH .
