Nazm al-Uqyan fi Ayan al-Ayan (The Stringing of Pure Gold Concerning the Notable Figures of the Elite) is a biographical dictionary compiled by the Egyptian scholar al-Jalal al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH / 1505 CE), chronicling prominent figures of the ninth Islamic century .
Scope and Method
In his preface to the work, al-Suyuti describes it as a concise compilation devoted to the notables of his time, noting that he deliberately restricted its contents to standout figures rather than gathering entries indiscriminately, selecting only the foremost scholars and distinguished personalities of the era . Among the biographical entries included in the book are those of the hadith master Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Burhan al-Din al-Naji, whom al-Suyuti designated as "the hadith scholar of Damascus" .
Manuscripts and Editions
Manuscripts of Nazm al-Uqyan are preserved across several collections, including Leiden University in the Netherlands, the Library of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the Arif Hikmat Library and the Islamic University in Medina, the Zahiriyya collection (reproduced in Kuwait), and the Al-Azhar Library in Cairo .
The text was edited by Philip Hitti and published in New York in 1927 . It was also issued by al-Maktaba al-Ilmiyya in Beirut .
