Nayl al-Amani fi Tawdih Muqaddimat al-Qastallani (The Attainment of Hopes in Clarifying al-Qastallani's Introduction) is a scholarly supercommentary (hashiyah) on the introductory treatise of Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Qastallani's commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, authored by the Egyptian scholar Abd al-Hadi Naja al-Abyari (1236–1305 AH / 1821–1888 CE) .
Composition and Background
Al-Abyari began composing the work while teaching Sahih al-Bukhari at al-Azhar . He was prompted to write it at the request of his colleague, Sheikh Muhammad al-Inbabi, who observed that despite the great necessity of al-Qastallani's introduction to Irshad al-Sari, students struggled with its dense formulation, leading to a decline in its study . Al-Abyari completed the manuscript on the 1st of Jumada al-Ula 1283 AH (September 1866 CE) .
Scope and Structure
The book serves as an explanatory gloss on the five-part theoretical introduction (muqaddimah) that precedes al-Qastallani's commentary Irshad al-Sari . Al-Abyari elucidates obscure expressions, resolves syntactical and terminological difficulties, and expands upon foundational topics in Hadith methodology (mustalah al-hadith) .
The structure follows the five chapters laid out in al-Qastallani's introduction:
- The Virtues of the People of Hadith: An exposition of the rank of Hadith scholars across generations, beginning with the prophetic narration: نَضَّرَ اللَّهُ امْرَأً سَمِعَ مَقَالَتِي فَحَفِظَهَا ("May Allah brighten the face of a person who hears my saying and preserves it") .
- The History of Codification: A survey of the earliest figures who compiled hadiths and sunan, alongside subsequent compilation efforts .
- Hadith Terminology and Transmission: A compendium covering essential categories of Hadith science, criteria of authenticity, and methods of receiving, conveying, and transcribing reports .
- Al-Bukhari and His Sahih: A detailed analysis of al-Bukhari’s methodology and conditions of narration, the comparison between Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, responses to classical criticisms against specific narrations and transmitters, the nature of chapter headings (tarajim), and the principles governing repeated or abridged texts .
- Biography and Reception: A biographical sketch of Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari, his lineages, travels, teachers, primary transmitters of his collection, and a survey of major commentaries written on the Sahih .
Publication History
The work was printed in Cairo with al-Qastallani's introduction printed in the margins, and it was proofread by Muhammad al-Zuhri al-Ghamrawi . It was subsequently published by al-Matba'ah al-Maymaniyyah in 1323 AH (1905 CE) and received later modern publication edited by Ahmad Ma'but (Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, 1422 AH / 2001 CE) . A separate, multivolume work sharing the same title was authored by Muhammad Yahya al-Kandhlawi and edited by Muhammad Zakariyya al-Kandhlawi .
