Nawahid al-Abkar wa Shawarid al-Afkar (The Budding Maidens and Stray Thoughts), also known as Hashiyat al-Suyuti ala Tafsir al-Baydawi, is a supercommentary (hashiya) by al-Jalal al-Suyuti (849–911 AH / 1445–1505 CE) on the Quranic commentary Anwar al-Tanzil wa Asrar al-Ta'wil by Nasir al-Din al-Baydawi (d. 685 AH / 1286 CE).

Scope and Contents

Al-Suyuti opens the work by noting that exegesis in the earliest era of Islam was restricted to audition and direct transmission, preserved orally and revolving around narrative reports. In his gloss, al-Suyuti engaged with al-Baydawi's interpretations, linguistic discussions, and poetical citations. The author noted that he reached the end of Surah al-An'am in his composition of the hashiya.

Manuscripts of the text are preserved in libraries such as the Zahiriyyah Library in Damascus, where an eleventh-century AH manuscript is cataloged under number 477 (Tafsir 81), featuring rubrics in red ink and marginal annotations.
