Nasikh al-Hadith wa Mansukhuhu (The Abrogating and Abrogated Hadith) is a specialized treatise on the science of hadith abrogation authored by the Baghdadi hadith scholar and preacher Abu Hafs 'Umar ibn Ahmad ibn 'Uthman, known as Ibn Shahin (297–385 AH / 909–995 CE) .
Subject and Content
The work addresses the identification of legal rulings and prophetic traditions that superseded earlier rulings within the Sunnah, compiling reports accompanied by their chains of transmission on disputed legal and ritual questions . It stands among the prominent early independent compositions dedicated to the topic of hadith abrogation (nasikh al-hadith wa-mansukhuhu) .
Reception and Influence
Later scholars of hadith abrogation relied heavily on Ibn Shahin's material . Ibn al-Jawzi (d. 597 AH) derived the core hadith content of his own work on the subject directly from Ibn Shahin, following nearly all of the legal questions he presented while rearranging them according to the topical chapters of jurisprudence (abwab al-fiqh) . Ibn al-Jawzi also offered sharp critical evaluations of Ibn Shahin, rejecting his assertions of abrogation in several instances .
In comparative analyses of classical hadith abrogation literature, scholars categorize the surviving treatises into two main groups: one consisting of Ibn Shahin's text and Ibn al-Jawzi's adaptation, and another consisting of the works of Abu Bakr al-Hazimi (d. 584 AH) and Ibrahim ibn 'Umar al-Ja'bari (d. 732 AH) .
Abridgments and Editions
The book was abridged into a single volume by the Damascene scholar Ibrahim ibn 'Ali, known as Ibn 'Abd al-Haqq (d. 744 AH) .
The text has been published in modern editions, including:
- An edition edited by Samir al-Zuhayri, published by Maktabat al-Manar in Zarqa .
- An edition edited by Subhi al-Samarra'i, Abu al-Ma'ati al-Nuri, and Mahmud Khalil al-Sa'idi, published by 'Alam al-Kutub and Maktabat al-Nahdah al-'Arabiyyah in Beirut .
