Nahj al-Wusul ila Haqiqat Mahabbat al-Rasul (The Approach to Reaching the True Reality of Loving the Messenger) is an Islamic theological treatise on the obligation, nature, and manifestations of loving the Prophet Muhammad, based on the scholarship of contemporary Saudi theologian Muhammad ibn Khalifa al-Tamimi.
Origin and Scope
The treatise was extracted from Muhammad ibn Khalifa al-Tamimi's larger work, Huquq al-Nabi 'ala Ummatihi fi Daw' al-Kitab wa-l-Sunnah (The Rights of the Prophet over His Nation in Light of the Book and the Sunnah), and prepared for standalone publication by Abd al-Jabbar ibn Abd al-Azim Al Majid. The aim of issuing the section independently was to provide a focused study for the general Muslim readership on fulfilling the duty of loving and revering the Prophet while steering clear of theological extremism (ghuluww) or unlawful innovations.
Contents and Structure
The book is structured around several foundational themes concerning the Prophet's station, the demarcation of divine and prophetic rights, and the authentic indicators of devotion:
- Distinction Between Divine and Prophetic Rights: The work opens with a preliminary chapter warning against confusing the exclusive rights of God—such as acts of worship, lordship, and exclusive divine attributes—with the rights due to the Prophet. It cautions that excessive exaggeration or unchecked devotion can lead to directing worship to creation instead of God, thereby undermining the testimony of faith.
- Linguistic and Conceptual Definition of Love: The book analyzes the root meaning of love (mahabba) in Arabic lexicography and classical usage, referencing scholars such as Ibn al-Qayyim before defining its proper theological reality within the Islamic creed.
- The Prophet's Exalted Rank: It dedicates a section to demonstrating the Prophet's high station and honors bestowed upon him by God in both this world and the afterlife, drawing upon textual proofs to foster veneration and obedience.
- Signs and Rewards of True Love: The treatise outlines the concrete marks of sincere prophetic love, emphasizing adherence to the Sunnah, obedience to his commands, and affection for those whom the Prophet loved, including the Ahl al-Bayt (the prophetic household) and the Sahaba (Companions). It concludes with the spiritual and otherworldly rewards earned by embodying these signs.
