Muwatta Malik - Riwayat Abi Musab al-Zuhri is a prominent recension of the Muwatta, the foundational hadith and legal work compiled by Malik ibn Anas (93–179 AH / 711–795 CE), as transmitted by the Medinan jurist and judge Abu Mus'ab al-Zuhri (150–242 AH / 767–857 CE) .
Transmitter and Transmission
The recension was transmitted by Abu Mus'ab Ahmad ibn Abi Bakr al-Qasim—also identified in some sources as Zurarah—ibn al-Harith ibn Zurarah ibn Mus'ab ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf al-Qurashi al-Zuhri . A native of Medina, he served as its chief of police before being appointed to its judgeship, holding the post until his death in Ramadan 242 AH at the age of ninety-two, though Ibn Abd al-Barr recorded his death in 241 AH .
Abu Mus'ab's transmission of the Muwatta was passed down through figures such as Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Samad (and Ibrahim ibn Abd Allah) al-Hashimi, Zahir ibn Ahmad al-Sarakhsi, and al-Mu'ayyad al-Tusi . In later auditory chains (sama'), scholars such as Al-Dhahabi and al-Qasim ibn Yusuf al-Tujibi noted that certain legal sections—specifically the chapters on sharecropping (al-musaqah), profit-sharing partnership (al-qirad), and estate division (al-fara'id)—had become missing as an old transmission break (fawt qadim) in their specific lines of transmission .
Distinctive Features and Content
Abu Mus'ab's recension is considered among the latest versions of the Muwatta received from Malik . Ibn Hazm observed that along with the recension of Ahmad ibn Isma'il al-Sahmi, Abu Mus'ab's version contains approximately one hundred additional hadiths not found in other recensions of the work, reflecting Malik's practice of progressively incorporating narrations over time .
Despite these additions, Ibn Abd al-Barr noted that with regard to connected (mawusl) and hurrying or broken (mursal) chains, Abu Mus'ab's recension exhibits the closest degree of overall agreement with the widely received recension of Yahya ibn Yahya al-Laythi . It was also utilized alongside eleven other transmissions by Abu al-Qasim al-Ghafiqi (d. 381 AH) in compiling his Musnad al-Muwatta .
Scholarly Reception and Editions
The recension enjoyed significant esteem among hadith critics:
- Al-Daraqutni explicitly declared Abu Mus'ab trustworthy (thiqah) regarding the text of the Muwatta and gave precedence to his transmission over that of Yahya ibn Bukayr .
- The Andalusian scholar Baqi ibn Makhlad prioritized Abu Mus'ab's transmission when compiling his own Musnad, preferring it over the standard recension of Yahya ibn Yahya al-Laythi due to Abu Mus'ab's noble Qurayshite lineage and status .
A scholarly edition of the recension was edited by Bashshar Awwad Maruf and Mahmud Muhammad Khalil, published by Mu'assasat al-Risalah in Beirut in 1412 AH / 1991 CE .
