Mutammimat al-Ajrumiyya (Arabic: متممة الآجرومية, lit. 'The Completion of the Ajrumiyya') is a treatise on Arabic grammar written by the Maliki jurist and scholar al-Hattab al-Ru'ayni (902–954 AH / 1496–1547 CE) .
Purpose and Scope
Al-Hattab composed the work as a concise introduction to Arabic grammar designed to supplement and complete the grammatical topics treated in Ibn Ajurrum's al-Muqaddima al-Ajrumiyya . He structured it to serve as an intermediate text bridging introductory primers and advanced grammatical reference works . In educational curricula, students often study it after al-Ajrumiyya and prior to longer texts such as the Alfiyya . The work abridges most chapters found in Ibn Malik's Alfiyya while incorporating the core material of al-Ajrumiyya and adding supplementary discussions across its sections .
Method and Features
The text is characterized by concise, precise expression . Al-Hattab generally avoids divergent grammatical debates and predominantly adopts the positions of Ibn Malik . In demonstrating rules, he cites the Quran frequently, draws upon prophetic hadith rarely, and quotes poetry sparingly, often citing only a single hemistich rather than a full verse .
Commentaries and Derivatives
Mutammimat al-Ajrumiyya has received notable scholarly commentaries and glosses, including:
- al-Kawakib al-Durriyya, a widely circulated commentary completed in 1288 AH (1871 CE) by Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Bari al-Ahdal .
- al-Fawakih al-Janiyya, a commentary by Abd Allah ibn Ahmad al-Fakihi .
- al-Tatimma al-Qayyima and al-Matalib al-Saniyya (a supercommentary on al-Fakihi's al-Fawakih al-Janiyya), both by Muhammad al-Amin al-Harari .
- al-Durar al-Bahiyya, a modern commentary by Dhiyab al-Ghamidi .
