Musnad Usama ibn Zayd (Musnad al-Hibb Ibn al-Hibb Usama ibn Zayd) is a specialized hadith collection compiled by the hadith scholar Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi (d. 317 AH / 929–930 CE), dedicated to the narrations transmitted on the authority of the Prophet's companion Usama ibn Zayd .
Scope and Transmission
The work is organized as a single-companion musnad (a juz' collection) gathering the traditions reported from Usama ibn Zayd, known as the "beloved and son of the beloved" of the Prophet ﷺ . Al-Baghawi recorded these traditions through his own direct chains of transmission (asānīd) from prominent Baghdad scholars and hadith authorities of his time, including Ahmad ibn Mani', Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shayba, Abu Khaythama, Zuhayr ibn Harb, and Harun ibn 'Abdullah .
Method and Content
The collection records the various chains of transmission, variant phrasings, and corroborating paths (mutāba‘āt) for the traditions narrated by Usama . These include reports regarding ritual matters and the Prophet's biography, such as:
- Usama's report on the Prophet ﷺ entering the Kaaba, supplicating in all of its corners without performing ritual prayer inside, and then praying two units of prayer (rak‘atayn) facing the Kaaba upon exiting .
- Usama's narration of accompanying the Prophet ﷺ on the journey from Arafat to Muzdalifah, describing the Prophet's stop at the mountain pass for ablution and telling Usama that the prayer was ahead at Muzdalifah .
Al-Baghawi occasionally incorporates critical remarks on transmitter discrepancies and unique paths (afrād), such as pointing out where a narrator isolated a particular intermediate link in a chain when alternative, established paths were known directly through the primary successor narrator .
Manuscripts and Publication
A manuscript of the text is preserved in the Al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (under collection number 344, folios 143–153) . The book was edited by Hasan Amin al-Manduh under the title Musnad al-Hibb Ibn al-Hibb Usama ibn Zayd and published by Dar al-Diya' in Riyadh (1409 AH / 1989 CE) .
