Musnad Umar ibn al-Khattab (مسند عمر بن الخطاب) is a hadith monograph compiled by the Baghdadi scholar and jurist Abu Bakr al-Najjad (d. 348 AH / 960 CE), gathering narrations transmitted on the authority of the second Caliph, Umar ibn al-Khattab .
Transmission and Scope
The book is classified among single-subject hadith tracts (ajza', sing. juz'), focusing exclusively on the narrations attributed to Umar ibn al-Khattab . The primary transmission of the compilation is preserved through Abu Bakr al-Najjad's student, Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ibn Shadhan . Transmitters noted that at the conclusion of Ibn Shadhan’s transmission of the work, a small number of supplementary hadiths were appended from the transmission of Shuja' ibn Ja'far al-Sufi from his teachers .
The text was subsequently transmitted through lineages of prominent hadith scholars, including Abu Ghalib al-Baqillani, Abu al-Fath ibn al-Batti, Abu al-Munajja ibn al-Latti, and Ahmad ibn Abi Talib al-Hajjar, through whom later bibliographers and hadith authorities—such as Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Al-Suyuti—received their chains of transmission for the work .
