Musnad Ishaq ibn Rahwayh – Musnad Ibn Abbas (Musnad Ibn ‘Abbās, part of Musnad Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh) is a surviving section of the comprehensive hadith compendium by the scholar Ishaq ibn Rahwayh (161–238 AH / 778–853 CE), compiling prophetic traditions transmitted on the authority of the Companion Abdullah ibn Abbas .

Transmission and Context

The original Musnad of Ishaq ibn Rahwayh was a massive compendium comparable in scale to Musnad Ahmad; Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani described it as comprising six large volumes, while Siraj al-Din al-Qazwini recorded possessing it in three large volumes . Over time, more than half of the original manuscript transmission was lost, leaving several surviving individual sections, such as those of Aisha, Abu Hurayrah, and Ibn Abbas .

The primary chain of transmission for the surviving text traces from Ishaq ibn Rahwayh through his student Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Shirawayh, while a distinct abridged selection (muntakhab) was transmitted through Muhammad ibn Shadil al-Hashimi . Hadith scholars, including Ibn Hajar in al-Matalib al-Aliyah and al-Busiri in Ithaf al-khiyara al-maharah, utilized the extant portions of the work to document its unique additions (zawa'id) beyond the standard canonical collections .

Structure and Contents

The section organizes narrations reported by Ibn Abbas through his students among the Successors, categorized according to regional networks and specific transmission paths . Subheadings within the text demarcate narrations from transmitters of Mecca and Kufa, including chains passing through figures such as Tawus ibn Kaysan, Mujahid ibn Jabr, and Abu Jamrah al-Duba'i .

The recorded traditions address a wide array of legal, historical, and ritual topics, such as the rulings on travel during Ramadan, the sanctity and boundaries of Mecca during its conquest, the transmission of prophetic speeches, and instructions given to emissaries like Mu'adh ibn Jabal .

Publication

The extant portions of Musnad Ishaq ibn Rahwayh were edited by Abdul Ghafoor Abdul Haqq al-Balushi and published by Maktabat al-Iman in Medina (1412 AH / 1991 CE) . The Musnad Ibn Abbas section has also been published as an individual volume edited by Muhammad Mukhtar Dirar al-Mufti (Dar al-Kitab al-Arabi, 1423 AH), incorporating editorial cross-references from the edition prepared by al-Dar al-Athariyyah with commentary by Umar ibn Bassam ibn al-Sadiq .
