Musnad Ibn Zaydan is a hadith collection compiled by the Kufan hadith scholar Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Zaydan al-Bajali (222–313 AH / 837–925 CE) .

Author and Transmission

The compiler of the work was Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Zaydan ibn Burayd ibn Razin ibn Rabi' ibn Qatan al-Bajali, a traditionist based in Kufa . Evaluated as a trustworthy authority (thiqah) by al-Daraqutni and other biographers, he transmitted hadiths from leading scholars of his era, including Abu Kurayb Muhammad ibn al-Ala, Hannad ibn al-Sari, Muhammad ibn Tarif, Muhammad ibn Ubayd al-Muharibi, Ibrahim ibn Yusuf al-Sayrafi, and Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Ahmasi .

Ibn Zaydan's narrations and transmissions were relayed by numerous scholars across Iraq and beyond, including al-Tabarani, Abu Bakr ibn al-Muqri', Yusuf ibn al-Qasim al-Miyanaji, Abu Ahmad al-Hakim, and Abu Bakr al-Ji'abi, the latter of whom sometimes cited him by his grandfather's name as Abd Allah ibn Burayd .

Preservation and Surviving Parts

While the full text of Musnad Ibn Zaydan is numbered among the lost classical musnad compilations of early Islamic literature, portions of the text have been preserved through intermediate transmission chains . An excerpt titled Min Musnad Ibn Zaydan ("From the Musnad of Ibn Zaydan") was preserved through the transmission of Abu al-Tayyib Muhammad ibn al-Husayn ibn al-Nahhas al-Taymuli from Ibn Zaydan, and is incorporated and published within modern compilations of classical hadith tracts, such as Jamharat al-Ajza' al-Hadithiyyah .
