Musnad Ibn al-Mubarak is an early hadith collection compiled by the scholar, jurist, and traditionist of Merv, Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak (118–181 AH / 736–797 CE) .

Transmission and Isnads

The text was transmitted from Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak by his student Hibban ibn Musa al-Marwazi (d. 233 AH) . From Hibban, it was received and narrated by al-Hasan ibn Sufyan al-Nasawi al-Shaybani (d. 303 AH) .

A prominent later transmitter who heard the book directly from al-Hasan ibn Sufyan in Nasa was Abu Amr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hamdan al-Hiri al-Naysaburi, who enumerated the work among the transmitted musnad collections preserved in his audition . Major hadith masters, including Ibn Hibban and al-Daraqutni, routinely cited traditions through the transmission chain running from al-Hasan ibn Sufyan from Hibban ibn Musa from Ibn al-Mubarak .

Place in Early Hadith Literature

The compilation forms part of the early corpus of hadith works from the second century of Islam alongside Ibn al-Mubarak's other extant and recorded compositions, such as Kitab al-Zuhd (The Book of Asceticism), Kitab al-Birr wa-al-Silah (The Book of Piety and Kinship), and Kitab al-Jihad (The Book of Jihad) . Traditions recorded in the work are frequently cross-referenced by later hadith critics alongside parallel transmissions in the works of early authors such as Waki ibn al-Jarrah and Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi .
