Musnad Amat Allah Maryam is a collection of hadith transmissions belonging to the Hanbali traditionalist Sitt al-Qudat (691–758 AH / 1292–1357 CE), preserved as an individual hadith part (juz').
Author and Background
The work transmits narrations preserved by Umm Muhammad Maryam bint Abd al-Rahman ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Hanbaliyya, commonly titled Sitt al-Qudat. Born in Nablus in 691 AH—with alternate reports placing her birth in 692 AH or 721 AH—she studied under scholars including Abu al-Fadl Ahmad ibn Hibat Allah Ibn Asakir and narrated hadith in both Nablus and Damascus before dying in Nablus in the month of Muharram 758 AH. Her broad transmissions were also documented separately by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in a biographical dictionary titled Mu'jam al-Shaykha Maryam.
Scope and Structure
The preserved text represents a single hadith part extracted from what originally comprised a twenty-four-part musnad. This surviving portion contains thirteen narrations accompanied by their chains of transmission (isnads). The recorded transmissions cover a range of legal and doctrinal topics, including:
- Legal rulings concerning retaliation in bodily injuries, the impermissibility of receiving obligatory charity (zakat) for the Prophet ﷺ and his family, prohibitions involving usury, fosterage relations that preclude marriage, and bodily states that affect prayer and reciting the Quran.
- Merits and virtues, such as the virtues of enduring hardship in Medina and the unique intercessory status of the Prophet ﷺ.
Manuscript and Publication
The sole known manuscript of this surviving part is preserved in the Egyptian National Library (Dar al-Kutub al-Misriyya). It was edited by Majdi al-Sayyid Ibrahim, who provided biographical notices for the figures in the chains, documented the manuscript, and cross-referenced the narrations against standard hadith compendia. This edition was published in Cairo by Maktabat al-Qur'an in 1989 (80 pages).
