Musnad al-Siraj (also known as al-Musnad al-Kabir 'ala al-Abwab) is a Hadith collection compiled by the Hadith master and scholar of Nishapur, Abu al-Abbas al-Sarraj (216 or 218–313 AH / 831 or 833–925 CE) .

Structure and Methodology

Unlike traditional musnad works arranged according to the names of the Companions, al-Sarraj's collection is arranged topically by chapters of jurisprudence ('ala al-abwab / mubawwab) . It was termed a musnad because its narrations are recorded with continuous chains of transmission (musnadah) back to the Prophet ﷺ . Through this arrangement, the author combined the comprehensive documentation typical of musnad works with the accessibility and chapter organization of legal compendia (sunan and jawami') .

The collection contains sound (sahih), good (hasan), and weak (da'if) narrations . Scholars have noted that al-Musnad al-Kabir is distinct from al-Sarraj's other work, al-Mustakhraj 'ala Muslim, as it does not follow the specific extraction (takhrij) framework of Muslim's Sahih .

Transmission and Preservation

The primary surviving chain of transmission for the work goes through al-Sarraj's student, the ascetic and traditionist Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Khaffaf (d. 395 AH), and through Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri .

A substantial portion of the original work was lost over time; early bibliographic descriptions, such as those by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Kattani, indicate that only the sections covering ritual purity (taharah), prayer (salah), and related subjects survived in fourteen fascicles (ajza') . Ibn Hajar drew heavily upon the extant parts of the collection in his commentary Fath al-Bari and in Taghliq al-Ta'liq .

A surviving manuscript of the work is preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus, copied by the Hadith scholar Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi (d. 643 AH) . This copy contains nine disparate parts from al-Khaffaf's division and features audition certificates (sama'at) of scholars such as Yusuf ibn al-Zaki al-Mizzi and Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi .

Publication

The extant portion of Musnad al-Siraj was edited and verified by Irshad al-Haqq al-Athari and published by Idarat al-Ulum al-Athariyya in Faisalabad, Pakistan (1423 AH / 2002 CE) .
