Musnad al-Faruq (full title: Musnad al-Fārūq Amīr al-Mu’minīn Abī Ḥafṣ ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb wa-Aqwāluh ‘alā Abwāb al-‘Ilm) is a hadith and legal compendium compiled by the Syrian Shafi‘i scholar Ibn Kathir (d. 774 AH / 1373 CE), collecting the prophetic traditions and judicial statements attributed to the second caliph, ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb .

Background and Scope

Ibn Kathir cross-referenced this work in several of his major writings, including Ikhtiṣār ‘Ulūm al-Ḥadīth ("Abridgment of the Hadith Sciences") and Al-Bidāyah wa-al-Nihāyah ("The Beginning and the End") . In Al-Bidāyah wa-al-Nihāyah, he noted that alongside a volume devoted to the biography and historical events of ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, he dedicated a separate substantial volume to gathering ‘Umar's narrated traditions and legal verdicts, systematically ordered by subject matter .

Structure and Methodology

The work was not prefaced with an independent authorial introduction, serving functionally as a constituent component linked to Ibn Kathir's broader compilation, Jāmi‘ al-Masānīd wa-al-Sunan ("The Compendium of Musnads and Sunan") .

Instead of ordering narrations purely by chains of transmission under the narrator's name—as is standard in traditional musnad works—Ibn Kathir arranged the material according to topical chapters (abwāb) . The book encompasses:

  • Prophetic traditions narrated by ‘Umar (marfū‘) as well as non-prophetic reports and legal rulings stemming directly from him (mawqūf) .
  • Jurisprudential categories, beginning with ritual purity (ṭahārah) and prayer (ṣalāh), moving through acts of worship up to inheritance shares (farā’iḍ) and beyond .
  • Additional topical sections covering military expeditions and biography (siyar), portents of the end times (malāḥim), prophetic miracles (mu‘jizāt), and virtues (faḍā’il) .

Sources

In compiling the narrations and opinions of ‘Umar, Ibn Kathir drew on the primary hadith compendia that formed the core of his Jāmi‘ al-Masānīd wa-al-Sunan, specifically :

  • Musnad Aḥmad
  • Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī
  • Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim
  • Sunan Abī Dāwūd
  • Sunan al-Tirmidhī
  • Sunan al-Nasā’ī
  • Sunan Ibn Mājah
  • Musnad Abī Ya‘lā al-Mawṣilī
  • Al-Mu‘jam al-Kabīr of al-Ṭabarānī
  • Musnad al-Bazzār

Transmission and Modern Editions

The work has been preserved in an autograph manuscript penned by Ibn Kathir himself, held in the Egyptian National Library (Dār al-Kutub al-Miṣriyyah, Taymūr hadith collection, ms. 152), consisting of 220 folios (435 pages) and bearing marginal annotations and additions in the handwriting of Ibn Ḥajar al-‘Asqalānī .

The book has been edited in modern scholarship through multiple efforts:

  • An academic edition completed by Maṭar al-Zahrānī as a doctoral dissertation at Umm al-Qura University in Mecca .
  • A printed edition edited by ‘Abd al-Mu‘ṭī Amīn Qal‘ajī, published by Dār al-Wafā’ in Mansoura (first edition 1411 AH / 1991 CE) .
  • A complete edition based directly on the author's autograph copy with Ibn Hajar's marginalia, edited by Imām ibn ‘Alī ibn Imām and published by Dār al-Falāḥ in Fayoum (1430 AH / 2010 CE) .
