Author and Context
The compiler, Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Harb al-Askari al-Simsar, took his nisba from Askar Mukram, a town situated near Basra . He studied under leading hadith scholars of his era, transmitting from teachers such as al-Qa'nabi, Arim, Ibrahim ibn Humayd al-Tawil, Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi, Musaddad ibn Musarhad, Ali ibn Uthman al-Lahiqi, Sahl ibn Uthman, Abu Ma'mar al-Muq'ad, Hajjaj ibn Minhal, Ya'qub ibn Kasib, Ubayd Allah ibn A'isha, and Ali ibn Bahr al-Qattan . In 282 AH, he arrived in Basra, where students transmitted his works from him .
Content and Transmission
The work belongs to the musnad genre, organized around the narrations related by Abu Hurayra through different chains of transmission . Its contents were divided into parts (ajza'), from which subsequent hadith specialists cited individual sections, including its second part .
The primary transmission of the Musnad passed through his student Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Sahl ibn Umar al-Askari, who in turn transmitted it to Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani . Through Abu Nu'aym, the text continued to be transmitted down to later scholars, including continuous transmission lines maintained by figures such as Abu Ali al-Haddad, Ibn al-Bukhari, and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti . Later hadith compilers and bibliographers cited individual reports and acknowledged the work among the classical monographic musnad collections .
