Musalsal al-Eidayn (The Pattern-Chained Hadith of the Two Eids) is a short hadith monograph (juz') compiled by the Hanbali jurist and traditionist Jamal al-Din Yahya ibn Abi Mansur al-Sayrafi (583–678 AH / 1187–1279 CE), documenting his transmission chains for the pattern-chained hadith recited on the day of Eid .

Subject and Content

The work documents the audition (sama') of Ibn al-Sayrafi from his teachers of the musalsal hadith associated with the festival days (Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha), in which each narrator delivers the tradition between the Eid prayer and the Eid sermon .

Ibn al-Sayrafi records receiving this narration through several routes:

  • From Abu Sa'd Thabit ibn Mushrif al-Khabbaz al-Banna', read to him in the Grand Mosque of the Palace (Jami' al-Qasr) in Baghdad on the day of Eid al-Adha between the prayer and the sermon in 617 AH .
  • From the female scholar Sharaf al-Nisa' bint Abd Allah ibn al-Muhtadi bi-Llah in 616 AH .
  • From the jurist Muwaffaq al-Din Ibn Qudamah, read to him outside Damascus in 608 AH .

The transmission chain traces back through Abu al-Tayyib Tahir ibn Abd Allah al-Tabari, Abu Ahmad al-Ghitrif al-Jurjani, Ali ibn Dahir al-Warraq, Abu Abd Allah Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ukht Sulayman ibn Harb, Bishr ibn Abd al-Wahhab al-Umawi, Waki' ibn al-Jarrah, Sufyan al-Thawri, and Ata' ibn Abi Rabah, reaching Abd Allah ibn Abbas . Ibn Abbas reported witnessing Eid prayer with the Prophet ﷺ, who turned after concluding the prayer and stated: يا أيها الناس قد أصبتم خيرا، فمن أحب أن ينصرف فلينصرف، ومن أحب أن يقيم حتى يشهد الخطبة فليقم ("O people, you have attained good; whoever wishes to depart may depart, and whoever wishes to remain to witness the sermon may remain") .

The text also appends a second narration transmitted with the same chain: من قرأ القرآن فكأنما شافهته ("Whoever recites the Quran, it is as if I addressed him directly"), followed by the recitation of the verse: وأوحي إلي هذا القرآن لأنذركم به ومن بلغ .

Publication

The tract was edited by Muhammad ibn Turki al-Turki, with an introduction by Ahmad Ma'bad, and published by Dar al-Watan in Riyadh (1420 AH / 1999 CE) in a single compendium alongside two other monographs on the same theme: al-Ahadith al-Idayyah al-Musalsalah by Abu Tahir al-Silafi (d. 576 AH) and 'Illat al-Hadith al-Musalsal fi Yawm al-Eidayn by Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Yusuf al-Qadi al-Jurjani (d. 489 AH) .
