Musalsal al-Eidayn lil-Kattani wa lil-Khatib al-Baghdadi (The Patterned Transmission of the Two Eids by al-Kattani and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi) is a composite edition containing two fifth-century AH hadith tracts on patterned transmission (musalsal) related to the two Islamic festivals (Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha), authored by the Damascene traditionist Abu Muhammad Abd al-Aziz ibn Ahmad al-Kattani (389–466 AH / 999–1074 CE) and the Baghdadi scholar al-Khatib al-Baghdadi (392–463 AH / 1002–1071 CE) .
Contents and Structure
The publication brings together two specialized hadith booklets (ajza'):
- Juz' fihi Musalsal al-Eidayn wa-ghayr dhalik by Abu Muhammad al-Kattani: Centered on narrations characterized by a patterned feature (musalsal), where each transmitter in the chain narrates the text to his student specifically on the day of Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha between the prayer and the sermon . The core narration records that after completing the Eid prayer, the Prophet ﷺ informed the congregation that whoever wished to remain seated for the sermon might stay, and whoever wished to leave was permitted to depart . Al-Kattani transmits several routes of this hadith, including paths through al-Khatib al-Baghdadi from Abu Nu'aym al-Isfahani and Abu al-Tayyib al-Tabari . In addition to the patterned report, al-Kattani includes traditions regarding Eid practices, such as the greeting تَقَبَّلَ اللَّهُ مِنَّا وَمِنْكَ ("May Allah accept from us and from you"), setting up a spear as a sutrah during prayer, pronouncing takbir aloud on the way to the prayer ground, historical notes regarding carrying weapons on Eid in Damascus, and reports describing the night and morning of Eid al-Fitr as the time of divine reward (laylat al-ja'izah) .
- Hadith Musalsal al-Eidayn by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi: A short treatise dedicated to assembling his own transmission routes for the patterned Eid hadith as received from his teachers, transmitted on the day of the feast .
Transmission and Publication
The collective text preserves explicit audition and transmission records (riwayah and sama') detailing how the tract passed down through generations of scholars . Among its intermediate transmitters were Ali ibn al-Muslim al-Sulami, al-Qasim ibn Ali (the son of Ibn Asakir), Abu Bakr ibn Hirzallah al-Qafasi al-Tunisi, Jamal al-Din Ya'qub ibn Abi Bakr al-Tabari, and Radi al-Din Ibrahim al-Tabari, who recited the text in locations such as the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and the Masjid al-Haram facing the Ka'bah on Eid days .
The combined work was edited and researched by Majdi Fathi al-Sayyid and published in a single volume by Maktabat al-Fu'ad and Maktabat al-Rushd in Riyadh in 1416 AH / 1995 CE .
