Muqtatafat min Kitab min Rawa'i Hadaratina (Excerpts from the Book "From the Splendors of Our Civilization") is a work comprising selected passages from the book Min Rawa'i Hadaratina by the Syrian scholar Mustafa al-Sibai (1333–1384 AH / 1915–1964 CE), highlighting notable achievements and features of Islamic civilization .
Origin and Composition
The material in Min Rawa'i Hadaratina originated as a series of radio lectures delivered by al-Sibai over the radio station in Damascus beginning on 20 Muharram 1375 AH (8 September 1955 CE) . Al-Sibai noted in his preface that he aimed to present select examples of the remarkable aspects of Islamic civilization to a general listening audience of varying educational and intellectual backgrounds, rather than offering an exhaustive or purely academic study . He was unable to continue the radio series because he had to prepare for a scholarly trip to the West in 1956 CE, leaving out several topics he had intended to discuss, such as historical exemplars of positive spirituality characterized by faith, moral refinement, and devotion to truth .
Purpose and Reception
Al-Sibai published the work to highlight the historical achievements of Islamic civilization as proof that the Muslim community retains the capacity to build an elevated and humane civilization, and to remind younger generations of their duty to revive this legacy . The text was later reissued by Mustafa Muhammad al-Tahhan as part of the Tawhid al-Mafahim educational series intended for students and youth movements worldwide to provide civilizational orientation and intellectual preparation .
Publication
A single-volume edition of Muqtatafat min Kitab min Rawa'i Hadaratina, comprising excerpts from the complete work, was published in 1420 AH (1999 CE) jointly by Dar al-Warraq lil-Nashr wa-al-Tawzi' in Beirut and al-Maktab al-Islami .
