Muqaranat al-Marwiyyat (Arabic: مقارنة المرويات, lit. 'Comparison of Transmissions') is a specialized work on Hadith methodology and criticism by Ibrahim ibn Abd Allah al-Lahim . It serves as the third installment in his multi-part series Silsilat Naqd al-Marwiyyat (Critique of Narrations Series), following his volumes on al-Jarh wa-al-Ta'dil (narrator appraisal) and al-Ittisal wa-al-Inqita' (chain continuity and discontinuity) .
Concept and Scope
The book examines the process of comparing and collating narrations (muqāranat al-marwiyyāt), defining it as the cross-examination of transmissions against one another to identify points of convergence and divergence in order to determine whether a given text (matn) is reliably established from the Prophet ﷺ . The author maintains that the science of Hadith criticism as practiced by early critical authorities (al-mutaqaddimūn) is grounded fundamentally in cross-referencing chains and texts; narrator reliability and chain continuity were themselves derived primarily from this comparative process .
Structure and Contents
The work is organized into an introduction and three major parts (abwāb) :
- Part One: Introductions to the Comparison of Narrations (Muqaddimāt fī Muqāranat al-Marwiyyāt): Comprises four chapters addressing the sources of Hadith transmission paths (ṭuruq) and factors behind their scarcity or abundance; fundamental technical terminology, such as the common pivot (al-madār), narrational variant (al-wajh), corroboration (al-mutāba'ah), and supporting witness (al-shāhid); the diagrammatic outlining of chains of transmission; and the critical methods used during the era of active transmission .
- Part Two: Solitary Transmission and Its Rulings (al-Tafarrud wa-Aḥkāmuh): Features an introductory overview and four chapters covering the stance of the early critics toward solitary narrations, the criteria governing tafarrud (including absolute and relative solitary reports), the approach of later scholars (al-muta'akhkhirūn), and textual analyses of statements made by classical critics .
- Part Three: Discrepancies and Hidden Defects in Hadith (Qadāyā al-Ikhtilāf wa-'Ilal al-Aḥādīth): The longest section of the book, focusing on the core issues of hidden defects ('ilal), the nature and types of differences when multiple narrators transmit contradictory variants from a shared teacher, the contrast between the methodologies of early and later scholars, and the contextual indicators (qarā'in) employed to balance and weigh competing transmissions . The author summarizes these preference indicators into four main categories: the numerical quantity of transmitters on each side, and three strength-based factors (retention and precision, standing relative to the common teacher, and specific strengths or weaknesses of the narrator) .
Method and Publication
The author structures his analysis around an extensive use of practical Hadith examples, highlighting common departures from the methodological principles of early critics and emphasizing the interconnectedness of branches of Hadith criticism . The book was published in two volumes by Mu'assasat al-Rayyan in Beirut, with its first edition appearing in 1433 AH (2012 CE) and a second edition in 1436 AH .
