Muqaddimat Ibn al-Salah wa Mahasin al-Istilah is a scholarly work on hadith terminology that combines the foundational treatise Ma‘rifat Anwa‘ ‘Ilm al-Hadith (commonly known as Muqaddimat Ibn al-Salah) by Ibn al-Salah (d. 643 AH / 1245 CE) with the analytical commentary and marginal additions entitled Mahasin al-Istilah by Siraj al-Din al-Bulqini (724–805 AH / 1324–1403 CE) .

Background and Structure

Ibn al-Salah composed his work on the disciplines of hadith while teaching at the Ashrafiyyah Hadith School in Damascus, dividing it into sixty-five categories of hadith sciences . His compilation became a primary reference for subsequent generations of scholars, prompting numerous abridgments, commentaries, versifications, and critical annotations (nukat) .

In the late eighth century AH, Siraj al-Din al-Bulqini compiled Mahasin al-Istilah wa-Tadmin Kitab Ibn al-Salah . The work was structured in two coordinated parts: the textual inclusion (tadmin) of Ibn al-Salah’s original material alongside al-Bulqini’s supplementary notes, corrections, and evaluations .

Method and Content

Al-Bulqini arranged his interventions systematically throughout the text, demarcating each analytical entry with specific headings such as fa’idah ("benefit"), ziyadah ("addition"), or fa’idah wa-ziyadah, and concluding each remark with the word intahat ("concluded") .

His commentary addresses earlier criticisms directed against Ibn al-Salah, particularly those by Ala' al-Din Mughaltay in Islah Kitab Ibn al-Salah, though al-Bulqini typically referred to objections in the passive voice rather than naming Mughaltay explicitly . In addition to technical hadith terminology, al-Bulqini integrated discussions on principles of Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh) and legal deduction .

Reception and Transmission

Mahasin al-Istilah was read directly to al-Bulqini by several leading scholars and students in Cairo, including Muhammad ibn Salim al-Hanbali (who completed reading the work to him on the eve of Saturday, 20 Dhu al-Qa‘dah 790 AH at al-Bulqini’s school in Harat Baha' al-Din), Umar ibn Ali ibn Faris (known as Ibn Qari' al-Hidayah), Shams al-Din Muhammad ibn Ammar al-Maliki, and Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn al-Furat .

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani noted in al-Majma‘ al-Mu’assas that al-Bulqini drew upon Mughaltay's work, pointing out certain errors while adopting others, and observed that the book was not commensurate with al-Bulqini’s immense stature in Islamic scholarship . The text was versified by Tahir ibn al-Hasan ibn Habib al-Halabi (d. 808 AH), who completed his poetic rendition in Dhu al-Hijjah 807 AH . Subsequent hadith commentators drew upon al-Bulqini's remarks, notably al-Sakhawi in his commentary Fath al-Mughith .

Modern Publication

The work was edited and published under the unified title Muqaddimat Ibn al-Salah wa Mahasin al-Istilah by Dr. Aisha Abd al-Rahman (Bint al-Shati'), published by Dar al-Ma‘arif in Cairo as part of the Dhakha'ir al-‘Arab series . Her critical edition relied on the primary manuscript held at Dar al-Kutub in Cairo (MS 141 Mustalah Hadith), which contains the author's own audition certificate and validation from 790 AH .
