Munyat al-Sajid bi Sharh Bidayat al-Abid wa Kifayat al-Zahid (The Worshiper's Wish: A Commentary on The Beginner's Start and the Ascetic's Sufficiency) is a contemporary Hanbali jurisprudence commentary co-authored by Anas bin Adil al-Yatama and Abd al-Aziz bin Adnan al-Iydan . It serves as an explanatory guide and evidentiary study on Bidayat al-Abid wa Kifayat al-Zahid, a primer dedicated to the rules of ritual worship authored by Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah al-Ba'li (d. 1192 AH) .
Background and Purpose
The base text, Bidayat al-Abid, was composed by al-Ba'li as an accessible primer restricted to the rulings of ritual worship (ibadat) according to the Hanbali school . Although al-Ba'li wrote his own commentary on it, titled Bulugh al-Qasid Jull al-Maqasid, that work was extremely brief and omitted textual proofs . To fill this gap for modern students, al-Yatama and al-Iydan authored Munyat al-Sajid as a step-by-step commentary intended to serve as the entry point in a graded curriculum of Hanbali jurisprudence—to be followed by Akhsar al-Mukhtasarat and Zad al-Mustaqni' .
To establish the matn (base text), the authors relied on a holographic manuscript of al-Ba'li's Bulugh al-Qasid, transcribed in al-Muharram 1171 AH and held in the al-Asad National Library (no. 33791) .
Method and Sources
The commentary is structured around several pedagogical principles:
- Clarification and Classification: The authors explain the concise terminology of the base text, dividing legal issues into structured categories, classifications, and branch rulings without long digressions .
- Evidence and Legal Reasoning: Every stated ruling is accompanied by either a textual proof (dalil) or a legal rationale (ta'lil) .
- Adherence to the School's Relied-Upon Position: The work strictly follows the authoritative, relied-upon position (al-mu'tamad) among late Hanbali jurists .
- Primary Sources: The authors primarily draw their material from the reference works of Mansur ibn Yunus al-Buhuti, specifically Kashshaf al-Qina' and Sharh Muntaha al-Iradat .
- Alternative Views: Where significant, the commentators occasionally note variant transmissions (riwayah), legal faces (wajh), or influential minority opinions within the school to alert students to differences in legal reasoning .
Publication
The book was published in a single volume by Dar Raka'iz for Publishing and Distribution in its first edition in 1438 AH / 2017 CE .
