Muntaqa min Hadith al-Jassas wal-Hanai (Selection from the Hadith of al-Jassas and al-Hinna'i) is a hadith tract (juz') compiled by the Hanbali traditionist Ahmad ibn Abd al-Daim al-Maqdisi (d. 668 AH / 1269 CE), gathering selected prophetic traditions and narrations transmitted from Abu Yusuf Ya'qub ibn Ahmad al-Jassas and Abu Bakr Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Hinna'i .
Transmission and Structure
The tract is organized into two distinct selections based on their immediate sources of transmission :
- Selection from al-Jassas: The first part contains traditions selected from the first part (al-juz' al-awwal) of the hadith of Abu Yusuf Ya'qub ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Jassas al-Du'a (hadiths 1–40) . The transmission chain opens through Muhammad ibn Hamzah ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Jamil al-Qurashi, who heard it read to Hibat Allah ibn Ahmad al-Akfani in Dhu al-Qi'dah 520 AH, who took it from Abu al-Qasim al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Hinna'i in Dhu al-Hijjah 456 AH, who received it from Abu Bakr Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Hinna'i al-Baghdadi in Damascus, from al-Jassas .
- Selection from al-Hinna'i: The second section comprises narrations extracted from Fawa'id Abi Bakr al-Hinna'i (Abu Bakr Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Hilal al-Hinna'i al-Baghdadi) from his various teachers (hadiths 41 to the end) .
The narrations cover a variety of jurisprudential and ethical topics, including prayer, ritual purity, fasting and cupping, pilgrimage, marriage and divorce, and moral conduct, concluding with a biographical anecdote about Sufyan ibn Uyaynah seeking knowledge as a youth from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri .
Manuscript Preservation
A manuscript copy of the work is preserved in the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus as part of the al-Umariyya collection (General MS 3853, Majmu' 117, fols. 157–164) .
