Muntaqa al-Alfaz bi-Taqrib Ulum al-Hadith lil-Huffaz (The Selection of Expressions in Bringing Near the Hadith Sciences for Memorizers) is a handbook on hadith sciences and methodology by Abu Ali al-Harith ibn Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Hasani.
Purpose and Approach
The author composed the treatise as an introductory gateway (madkhal) for beginners, designed to provide foundational keys that assist students at initial, intermediate, and advanced stages of study. The work places particular emphasis on reviving the terminology, principles, and analytical methods of early hadith scholars (al-mutaqaddimun), rather than relying solely on the codified frameworks developed by later scholars (al-muta'akhkhirun).
Structure and Content
The book is organized into six core chapters (mabahith):
- Definitions of Hadith Terminology: Comprehensive definitions prioritizing the usages of early scholars alongside selected later terms, accompanied by key rules and principles.
- Prolific Trustworthy Transmitters: A survey of central, prolific transmitters (al-thiqat al-mukthirun) around whom transmission chains revolve—including their names, cognomens, kunyas, and lineages—followed by essential principles for analyzing narrators and hidden defects (al-ilal).
- Comprehensive Primary Compilations: An overview of primary musnad collections preserving core authentic transmissions and isnads.
- Chapters and Narrations Devoid of Authentic Hadiths: An enumeration of specific subject areas and reports in which no authentic hadith exists, enabling students to recognize hundreds of weak narrations without needing independent isnad criticism.
- Differences Between Early and Later Scholars: An analytical summary outlining the methodological contrasts and divergences between the early and later authorities.
- Essential Bibliography: A selected guide to essential reference works across primary texts (mutun), terminology, biographical evaluation (jarh wa-ta'dil), defect literature, takhrij, and authorial methodologies.
Reception and Publication
The work received a commendation (taqriz) from the Iraqi hadith scholar Subhi al-Samarra'i, who praised it as an unprecedented and comprehensive compilation of hadith sciences and recommended that students acquire and memorize it.
The book was published in Damascus by Maktabat Dar al-Bayan in two editions; the author introduced minor corrections and notable additions in the second edition.
