Mulakhkhas Tabaqat al-Mudallisin (Summary of the Tiers of Obfuscating Narrators) is a concise hadith tract by the Yemeni scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Muallimi al-Yamani (d. 1386 AH / 1966 CE), abridging Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's (d. 852 AH / 1449 CE) biographical work on narrators accused of tadlis (obfuscation in narration) .
Purpose and Scope
The treatise summarizes Ibn Hajar's Ta'rif Ahl al-Taqdis bi-Maratib al-Mawsufin bi-l-Tadlis, commonly known as Tabaqat al-Mudallisin, which is among the most comprehensive compilations on narrators characterized by tadlis . Although al-Muallimi did not explicitly articulate his motive for the abridgment, it served to create a compact reference allowing easy recall of narrators accused of tadlis .
Structure and Method
Al-Muallimi preserved the overall scope of Ibn Hajar's five-tier framework, retaining all 151 biographical entries from the original text without omitting any . The work opens with the first tier, comprising thirty-three narrators who were only rarely described with tadlis .
Throughout the text, al-Muallimi condensed the entries by adapting narrator names, occasionally reducing them to a single proper name—such as Atiyyah, Baqiyyah, or Makhul—or to their epithets alone . Despite this brevity, he specifically recorded the critic who attributed tadlis to each narrator .
Publication
The tract was published as the tenth treatise in the fifteenth volume of al-Muallimi's collected works, Athar Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Muallimi al-Yamani, which gathers his shorter writings and monographs on hadith sciences .
