Mukhtasar Talkhis al-Dhahabi li-Mustadrak al-Hakim (abridgment of al-Dhahabi's summary of al-Hakim's Mustadrak) is a hadith critical work by the Egyptian Shafi'i scholar Ibn al-Mulaqqin (723–804 AH / 1323–1401 CE), which extracts and supplements the critical remarks made by Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi on al-Hakim al-Naysaburi's al-Mustadrak 'ala al-Sahihayn .
Title and Composition
Ibn al-Mulaqqin did not explicitly assign a specific title to the book within its text, although he stated in his introduction that his intention was to gather the narrations where al-Dhahabi took issue with al-Hakim . Consequently, the work appears under several titles across manuscripts and bibliographies:
- In one primary manuscript, it is titled Mukhtasar Istidrak al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi 'ala Mustadrak Abi 'Abd Allah al-Hakim 'ala al-Sahihayn .
- In another manuscript copy, it is titled al-Nukat al-Litaf fi Bayan al-Ahadith al-Di'af al-Mukhrajah fi Mustadrak al-Hakim al-Naysaburi ("Subtle points explaining the weak hadiths in al-Hakim's Mustadrak") .
- In his biographical dictionary al-'Iqd al-Mudhahhab, Ibn al-Mulaqqin listed it as al-I'tiradat 'ala al-Mustadrak ("Objections to al-Mustadrak"), a title echoed by Ibn Qadi Shuhbah as al-I'tirad 'ala Mustadrak al-Hakim .
- In the introduction to his legal hadith commentary al-Badr al-Munir, Ibn al-Mulaqqin referred to it noting that he isolated what al-Dhahabi refuted against al-Hakim in his Talkhis, adding further points of his own, and that the resulting draft comprised seven quires (kararis) .
In the work's conclusion, Ibn al-Mulaqqin offered an excuse for instances where he followed al-Dhahabi's mistakes or committed oversights in his own critiques, explaining that he wrote those sections from memory because his reference books remained behind in Egypt .
Method and Scope
The work is organized according to the original chapter ordering of al-Hakim's al-Mustadrak . Ibn al-Mulaqqin restricted his selection to narrations where al-Dhahabi criticized al-Hakim's evaluation, as well as narrations where Ibn al-Mulaqqin added his own critical remarks against either scholar . Narrations that al-Dhahabi endorsed without objection or omitted entirely from his Talkhis were excluded .
The work differs methodologically from al-Dhahabi's Talkhis in several respects:
- Chains of transmission (isnad): Whereas al-Dhahabi often retained one or two narrators before the locus of defect or began directly with the criticized narrator, Ibn al-Mulaqqin stripped away the entire chain, keeping only the Companion narrator and occasionally the Successor who reported from him .
- Hadith texts (matn): While al-Dhahabi typically quoted the complete text or a substantial portion of lengthy hadiths, Ibn al-Mulaqqin generally cited only the opening words (taraf) or the underlying meaning, quoting the text in full only when it was brief .
- Content scope: Al-Dhahabi included both the narrations he approved and those he criticized, whereas Ibn al-Mulaqqin strictly isolated the contested narrations .
Editions
The text was edited based on two manuscript witnesses by 'Abd Allah ibn Hamad al-Luhaydan and Sa'd ibn 'Abd Allah Al Humayyid as a joint master's thesis presented to the Faculty of Usul al-Din at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh . The edition covers 1,182 numbered hadiths and was published in eight volumes by Dar al-'Asimah in Riyadh in 1415 AH / 1994–1995 CE under the title Mukhtasar Istidrak al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi 'ala Mustadrak Abi 'Abd Allah al-Hakim .
