Mukhtasar Tafsir Surat al-Anfal (Abridgment of the Exegesis of Surah al-Anfal) is an exegetical treatise by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1115–1206 AH / 1703–1792 CE) covering the commentary on Surat al-Anfal and the Quranic verses revealed regarding the Battle of Badr .
Scope and Content
The treatise opens with an account of what was revealed from the Quran concerning the Battle of Badr (Dhikr ma nazala min al-Qur'an fi waq'at Badr) . It cites the narration of Ibn Abbas that Surat al-Anfal was revealed about Badr, as well as the narration of Ubada ibn al-Samit explaining the circumstances surrounding the revelation of the opening verse: يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَنْفَالِ قُلِ الْأَنْفَالُ لِلَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ ("They ask you about the spoils of war. Say, 'The spoils of war belong to Allah and the Messenger'") . The account details how the Muslim fighters divided into three groups during the battle—one pursuing the enemy, one securing the spoils, and one guarding the Prophet ﷺ—and how the dispute over the spoils was resolved when Allah entrusted their distribution to the Prophet ﷺ .
Manuscript Tradition and Publication
A manuscript of the work was preserved in the Awqaf Library in Baghdad within a collective manuscript containing treatises by Hanbali scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Rajab, alongside two other treatises by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab: al-Radd 'ala al-Rafidah and Dhikr ba'd al-fawa'id allati fi qissat al-Hudaybiyyah . The text was photographed and documented by the Center for Scientific Research and Islamic Heritage Revival at the Faculty of Sharia and Islamic Studies, King Abdulaziz University in Mecca . It was subsequently edited and published in the twelfth volume (Mulhaq al-Musannafat) of the collected works of the author (Mu'allafat al-Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab) .
