Mukhtasar Minhaj al-Sunna (Abridgment of the Path of the Prophetic Sunna) is an epitomized edition of Minhaj al-Sunna al-Nabawiyya, the major polemical and theological work authored by the Hanbali theologian and jurist Ibn Taymiyya (661–728 AH / 1263–1328 CE) . The text condenses Ibn Taymiyya's extensive refutation of Imami Shi'i doctrines and theological arguments surrounding the Imamate and the early Caliphate .

Background and Original Work

The source work, Minhaj al-Sunna al-Nabawiyya fi Naqd Kalam al-Shi'a wa-l-Qadariyya, was written by Ibn Taymiyya around 710 AH while residing in Egypt . He composed it after a group of Sunni scholars presented him with a copy of Minhaj al-Karama fi Ma'rifat al-Imama, a treatise composed by the Shi'i scholar Ibn al-Mutahhar al-Hilli (d. 726 AH) for the Ilkhanid ruler Öljaytü (Khudābandah) .

In his response, Ibn Taymiyya systematically evaluated al-Hilli's rational and scriptural proofs, defending the Sunni understanding of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ—most notably Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Umar ibn al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan, and Ali ibn Abi Talib—while critiquing Shi'i hadith transmission and theological premises .

Abridgments

Because of the vast size and discursive breadth of Ibn Taymiyya's multivolume original, several scholars produced abridgments to make its arguments more accessible:

  • Al-Dhahabi's Abridgment: Ibn Taymiyya's student, the historian and hadith master Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi (673–748 AH), compiled an early condensation entitled al-Muntaqa min Minhaj al-I'tidal fi Naqd Kalam Ahl al-Rafd wa-l-I'tizal (also titled Mukhtasar Minhaj al-Sunna al-Nabawiyya), selecting its core arguments and textual proofs . This version was later edited and published by Muhibb al-Din al-Khatib .
  • Safi al-Din al-Baghdadi's Abridgment: An early Hanbali abridgment in two concise volumes was prepared under the title al-Matalib al-'Awal li-Taqrir Minhaj al-Istiqama wa-l-I'tidal .
  • Abdullah al-Ghunayman's Abridgment: In the modern era, the Saudi scholar Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Ghunayman prepared a two-volume condensation titled Mukhtasar Minhaj al-Sunna . Al-Ghunayman retained Ibn Taymiyya's primary prose and polemical structure while omitting repetitive digressions, explicitly opting not to add extensive commentary because he considered Ibn Taymiyya's own wording and arguments sufficiently robust and clear .

Scope and Content

The abridged text focuses on core theological and historical disputes between Sunnis and Shi'is, structured around:

  • Critiques of the Imami doctrine of the infallible Imamate (imama) as a foundational pillar of faith .
  • Analysis of historical claims and polemics against the early caliphs, providing defences of Abu Bakr, 'Umar, and 'Uthman, alongside a Sunni perspective on the virtues of 'Ali .
  • Evaluation of transmission chains, authenticating reports accepted across mainstream hadith collections and rejecting fabricated or misattributed narrations regarding the virtues of the Prophet's family and companions .
