Mukhtasar al-Tabyin li-Hija al-Tanzil (Abridgment of the Clarification on the Orthography of Revelation) is an eleventh-century treatise on Quranic orthography (rasm al-mushaf) by the Andalusian scholar Abu Dawud Sulayman ibn Najah (413–496 AH / 1022–1103 CE) . Commonly referred to in scholarly literature as al-Tanzil or Mukhtasar al-Tabyin, it is one of the principal classical authorities on the spelling of the Uthmanic codices across Islamic regions .
Composition and Title
Abu Dawud composed the work by condensing his own encyclopedic treatise, al-Tabyin li-Hija Mus-haf Amir al-Mu'minin Uthman ibn Affan (also titled al-Tabyin li-Ilm al-Tanzil), which spanned six volumes . In his preface, the author noted that seekers from various lands requested that he extract a concise handbook focused strictly on the orthography of the codices from the larger work, avoiding extensive digressions on exegesis, legal rulings, and polemics .
Abu Dawud referred to the abridgment in his writings simply as al-Mukhtasar or his abridged work on orthography . Later scholars, such as Ibn Ashir, noted questions regarding whether the abridgment was executed by Abu Dawud himself, though internal textual statements and manuscript transmissions read directly to Abu Dawud confirmed his direct authorship . The work was transmitted by his student Ibrahim ibn Sahl al-Abdari, who read it to Abu Dawud in 469 AH .
Structure and Method
The book is arranged sequentially following the Quranic chapters (surahs), beginning with Surat al-Fatihah . Abu Dawud cites verse openings to delineate the text, followed by exhaustive documentation of the orthographic features of relevant words, including omissions (hadhf), additions (ithbat), connected spellings (wasl), and separated spellings (fasl) .
His method is grounded in transmitted reports (riwayah and sama') rather than grammatical analogy (qiyas), asserting that Quranic script must strictly follow established precedent . A distinctive feature of the work is its systematic correlation between regional orthographic variations—such as differences between the codices of Medina, Mecca, Kufa, Basra, and the Levant—and canonical recitation variants (qira'at), with special attention given to the reading of Nafi al-Madani .
Reception and Scholarly Standing
Mukhtasar al-Tabyin is considered one of the two foundational references for Quranic orthography alongside al-Muqni fi Ma'rifat Marsum Masahif Ahl al-Amsar by Abu Dawud's teacher, Abu Amr al-Dani . Later scholars of rasm and Quranic vocalization (dabt) drew heavily on Abu Dawud's verifications, often giving his conclusions precedence over al-Dani's when their reports diverged .
The text serves as a primary source for modern editorial committees tasked with supervising the printing of the Quran, including the scientific committee behind the Medina Mushaf produced by the King Fahd Complex for the Printing of the Holy Quran . The work was critically edited by Ahmad ibn Ahmad Sharshal based on extant manuscript copies and published by the King Fahd Complex in cooperation with the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies .
