Mukhtasar al-Ahkam (Arabic: مختصر الأحكام), also known as Mustakhraj al-Tusi 'ala Jami' al-Tirmidhi (مستخرج الطوسي على جامع الترمذي), is a hadith work composed by the scholar Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Nasr al-Tusi (d. 312 AH / 924 CE) as an extraction (mustakhraj) based on the Jami' of al-Tirmidhi .

Method and Relationship to Jami' al-Tirmidhi

In accordance with the methodology of the mustakhraj genre, al-Tusi collects the prophetic traditions recorded in Jami' al-Tirmidhi and relates them through his own independent chains of transmission (asānīd), converging with al-Tirmidhi at his direct teachers or earlier authorities in the isnad chain .

As noted by Zayn al-Din al-Iraqi, the work parallels Jami' al-Tirmidhi closely in its selection of hadiths, its topical chapters, and its analytical commentary, while al-Tusi also shared a considerable number of shaykhs directly with al-Tirmidhi .

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani pointed out in al-Nukat and Lisan al-Mizan that al-Tusi incorporates al-Tirmidhi's specific evaluations of each hadith—such as hasan or hasan sahih—virtually verbatim, but phrases them with passive attribution, typically writing «يقال: هذا حديث حسن» ("It is said: this is a hasan hadith") or «يقال: حديث حسن صحيح» ("It is said: a hasan sahih hadith") rather than stating the judgment categorically as his own . Ibn Hajar highlighted this exact phrasing as confirmation that al-Tusi was conveying al-Tirmidhi's evaluations directly within a mustakhraj framework .

Scope and Publication

The surviving portions of Mukhtasar al-Ahkam extend from the beginning of the collection up to the end of Kitab al-Manasik (the Book of Pilgrimage Rites) .

The work has been edited by Anis ibn Ahmad ibn Tahir al-Andunisi and published in four volumes by Maktabat al-Ghuraba' al-Athariyya in Medina (first edition, 1415 AH) .
