Mukaffirat al-Dhunub wa al-Khataya wa Asbab al-Maghfira min al-Kitab wa al-Sunna (Expiations of Sins and Misdeeds and the Means of Forgiveness from the Book and the Sunnah) is an Islamic treatise authored by Saeed bin Ali bin Wahf al-Qahtani (d. 1440 AH / 2018 CE), dedicated to identifying the acts and factors that erase sins and bring about divine pardon based on textual evidence from the Quran and the authentic Sunnah.
Composition and Structure
The treatise was completed on the morning of Monday, 13 Jumada al-Akhira 1432 AH. Al-Qahtani organized the work into an introduction followed by three main sections (mabahith):
- First Section (al-Mabhath al-Awwal): Focuses on the conceptual understanding of sin expiation (Mafhum mukaffirat al-dhunub). It elaborates on the linguistic and legal definitions of expiation (kaffara and takfir, denoting covering and wiping away sins), divine forgiveness (maghfira and ghafr, as divine concealment and pardoning of faults), the practice of seeking forgiveness (istighfar in word and deed), and the distinction and correlation between mercy (rahma) and forgiveness.
- Second Section (al-Mabhath al-Thani): Details expiations of sins derived from the Quran (Mukaffirat al-dhunub min al-Qur'an al-Karim). It examines various Quranic passages demonstrating how sound faith and righteous actions expiate both minor and major transgressions, improve the believer's worldly and religious state, and multiply their reward.
- Third Section (al-Mabhath al-Thalith): Outlines expiations of sins established in the authentic Sunnah (Mukaffirat al-dhunub min al-Sunnah al-mutahhara al-sahiha). It compiles rigorously authenticated hadiths detailing specific devotional acts and supplications that efface misdeeds and elevate ranks, beginning with the consistent remembrance and declaration of God's oneness ( لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ / "There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, with no partner").
