Mu'jam wa-Tafsir Lughawi li-Kalimat al-Qur'an (A Linguistic Dictionary and Commentary on the Words of the Quran) is a five-volume Quranic reference work compiled by the Egyptian scholar Hasan Izz al-Din al-Jamal (full name: Hasan Izz al-Din ibn Husayn ibn Abd al-Fattah Ahmad al-Jamal) . The book focuses on defining and explaining the lexical and semantic nuances of the vocabulary occurring throughout the Quran .

Structure and Methodology

The work is organized alphabetically according to Arabic roots and individual letters, beginning with the letter hamza . Under each root entry, the author extracts the specific Quranic terms derived from it and provides their linguistic definitions, often citing classical lexicographers such as Ibn Faris and including lines of classical Arabic poetry as linguistic evidence .

For each entry, the work provides:

  • The precise lexical meaning of the term in classical Arabic usage .
  • The corresponding Quranic verses containing the word, alongside the Surah name and verse numbers .
  • Cross-references directing the reader to related roots or variant forms of the word .

Sources

In compiling the dictionary, the author drew upon a wide array of classical and contemporary references in Arabic lexicography, exegesis, theology, and Quranic sciences . Among the cited sources are:

  • Classical lexicons and Quranic science manuals, such as Taj al-Arus by al-Murtada al-Zabidi (Muhibb al-Din al-Wasiti), Ibn Manzur's Lisan al-Arab, Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti's al-Itqan fi Ulum al-Qur'an, and Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi's al-Burhan fi Ulum al-Qur'an .
  • Theological and exegetical works, including Abu Hamid al-Ghazali's al-Maqsad al-Asna, al-Bayhaqi's al-Asma' wa-l-Sifat, Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi's al-Tafsir al-Wasit, and lectures by Muhammad Metwalli al-Sha'rawi .
  • Modern dictionaries, such as al-Mu'jam al-Wasit produced by the Academy of the Arabic Language in Cairo, and Jubran Mas'ud's al-Ra'id .
  • The author's own earlier publication, al-Asma' al-Husna (published in 1390 AH / 1970 CE) .

Publication

The work—also referenced under the title Makhtutat al-Jamal: Mu'jam wa-Tafsir Lughawi li-Kalimat al-Qur'an—was published in its first edition in five volumes by the General Egyptian Book Authority (al-Hay'ah al-Misriyyah al-Ammah lil-Kitab) in Egypt between 2003 and 2008 CE .
