Mujam Hufaz al-Quran Abr al-Tarikh (A Dictionary of Quran Memorizers Throughout History) is a biographical dictionary of Quran memorizers and reciters authored by the Egyptian scholar and qira'at specialist Muhammad Salim Muhaysin (d. 1422 AH / 2001 CE) .

Purpose and Composition

Muhaysin stated in his introduction that he composed the dictionary out of reverence for the high standing of Quran memorizers, considering it a duty to highlight their lives so that subsequent generations of Muslims might follow their example . Drawing upon biographical literature spanning from the era of the Prophet's Companions onward, he completed the first volume in Medina on Friday, 20 Ramadan 1408 AH (6 May 1988 CE) under the title Hufaz al-Quran Abr al-Tarikh . He finalized the preface to the second volume in Medina on Friday, 8 Jumada al-Thaniyah 1410 AH (5 January 1990 CE) .

Scope and Structure

The entries in the dictionary are arranged alphabetically to facilitate reference . The first part covers memorizers from the generation of the Companions up to the year 405 AH . In addition to this historical scope, the author deliberately appended biographies of his own teacher, Amir al-Sayyid Uthman (d. 1408 AH), as well as an autobiographical entry for himself detailing his training, appointment at al-Azhar, and his scholarly output in Quranic sciences and readings .

Method and Reception

Contemporary researchers in Quranic readings noted that Muhaysin did not explicitly lay out a formal methodological framework for his selection and presentation of biographical entries in the introduction, restricting himself instead to expressing his objective of presenting luminous aspects of these figures' lives .

Publication

The work was published in Beirut by Dar al-Jil, with a first edition issued in 1412 AH (1992 CE) .
