Mu‘jam al-Shu‘ara’ al-‘Arab (معجم الشعراء العرب, "Dictionary of Arab Poets") is a biographical dictionary of Arabic poets compiled from the digital database al-Mawsu‘ah al-Shi‘riyyah (The Poetry Encyclopedia) .
Scope and Structure
The work contains biographical entries for 2,300 Arab poets spanning all literary eras from the pre-Islamic period (al-Jahiliyyah) up to 1952 CE . While it includes major and prolific poets, many figures recorded in the compilation have only one or two surviving verses attributed to them .
The entries are arranged in strict alphabetical order following the scheme of the encyclopedia from which they were derived . Poets are listed primarily under the names or epithets by which they are most widely known, with prefixes and relational designations—such as Ibn, Ibnah, al-, Abu, Umm, and Zawjat—treated as integral elements of the name for alphabetical sorting . Each biographical entry typically provides the poet's birth and death years in both Islamic Hijri and Common Era calendars, their full genealogical lineage, places of origin or migration, brief biographical sketches, and references to their compositions or poetry .
