Mujam Ahamm Musannafat al-Tarajim al-Matbua

Mu‘jam Ahamm Musannafat al-Tarajim al-Matbu‘ah (The Dictionary of the Most Important Printed Biographical Works) is a bibliographical reference work compiled by Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Busiri, dedicated to cataloging and documenting printed classical and contemporary Arabic biographical dictionaries and biographical monographs .

Purpose and Scope

Al-Busiri compiled the dictionary to provide a practical guide for researchers and students, facilitating the identification of printed biographical works and clarifying the diverse genres that contain biographical material . In defining the scope of biographical literature included in the work, he divided relevant source material into six distinct categories:

  1. Dedicated biographical dictionaries (kutub al-tarajim al-khassah): Works purely devoted to biography, such as Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’ by al-Dhahabi, Wafayat al-A‘yan by Ibn Khallikan, and al-Wafi bi-l-Wafayat by al-Safadi .
  2. General historical chronicles: Historical works containing biographical sections, which al-Busiri divided into those with substantial biographical coverage—such as Tarikh al-Islam by al-Dhahabi, al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah by Ibn Kathir, al-Muntazam by Ibn al-Jawzi, and Shadharat al-Dhahab by Ibn al-‘Imad—and general chronicles where historical events predominate over biographies, such as Tarikh al-Tabari and al-Kamil by Ibn al-Athir .
  3. Genealogical works (kutub al-ansab): Including books combining lineage with biographical profiles, such as al-Ansab by al-Sam‘ani and al-Istibsar fi Nasab al-Ansar by Ibn Qudamah, as well as works focusing primarily on genealogy, such as Jamharat al-Ansab by Ibn al-Kalbi and Jamharat Ansab al-‘Arab by Ibn Hazm .
  4. Works on orthography and homonymous names (al-mu’talif wa-l-mukhtalif): Treatises that record and differentiate biographical names, titles, and patronymics, such as al-Mu’talif wa-l-Mukhtalif by al-Daraqutni, al-Ikmal by Ibn Makula, and al-Mushtabih by al-Dhahabi .
  5. Hadith criticism and transmitter defect literature (‘ilal al-hadith wa-rijaluhu): Works addressing transmitter evaluation and hidden defects, such as the ‘Ilal works by Ali ibn al-Madini and Ahmad ibn Hanbal .
  6. Academic theses and individual scholarly monographs: Modern university dissertations and focused studies examining specific scholars and their contributions in theology, exegesis, jurisprudence, and related fields .

Method and Structure

The dictionary is arranged alphabetically from alif to ya’ according to the titles of the cataloged works . Under each title entry, the author provides:

  • The title of the work .
  • The name of the author or compiler .
  • Publishing details for both classical and modern printings, differentiating between critically edited (muhaqqaqah) and unedited editions, and recording multiple print editions where available .

The compiler notes in his introduction that while he did not claim total exhaustiveness due to the vast volume of biographical literature, he sought to document a substantial and representative proportion of the printed corpus .
